« on: January 16, 2007, 06:51:10 AM »
is there much of a difference between the 24" barrel and the 26"  besides the price?

i'm just about ready to pull the trigger on one:D

2 inches! Sorry, couldn't resist. :-[ :-X ;D

I think it all boils down to what you want to use it for. If you want to shoot 3 pellets, get the 26", if you shoot loads with 100 grains or less, either will serve you well.

I have a 24" Huntsman, and it does everything I want it to do, but I don't shoot 3 pellet loads either. I personally think the 24" balances nicer than the 26" too.

the 26" is stainless, not too sure if it would look good with my color case hardened reciever ;D
i'm really leaning towards the blued barrel, it would look better with the case hardened reciever and my walnut stock

My Pardner frame is at NEF for a muzzleloader barrel right now. The C/S lady told me that there are no more 24" barrels, but the 26" is in stock. I think they discontinued the 24" when they dropped the Huntsman rifle. I believe the Sidekick is a muzzleloader-only item, and can be sold without filling out firearm paperwork.

I am with ottawa rogue and would prefer a 24" blued barrel and realize if I wanted to I could cut a couple of inches from the barrel but I have another concern. I have no expectation of hunting Pacaderyms or Grizzlies with my muzzleloader and am not affected with Magnumitus, rather I try to rely on a single well placed shot when I hunt, therefore I use loose powder tailored to the load projectile I am shooting which gives me the best accuracy in my ML's. With the 26" barrels being set up to use up to 150 grains of BP (ouch!!!) or three 50 grain pellets would the chamber area be so long that somewhere between 80-90 grains of BP or BP equivalant, Pyrodex of 777 (less 10-15%) would put the projectile to far back into the chamber area and possibly cause some sort of accuracy issues with the projectile possibly being driven beyond the rifling and actually into the combustion chamber area? Thanks for any thoughts....<><.... :)

MSP Ret,
The rifling starts right at the front end of the breech plug, so you would have no problem. I have the 24" bbl, and I have been using 90g of TS ffg. Might try TS fffg to squeak out a little more velocity in the shorter bbl. With steel rings and scope, the whole thing weighs 6.4 lbs. The 3 50g pellets are roughly equivalent to 120g of TS ffg, or probably 110g or less of TS fffg. Even the 24" bbl is still approved in the manual for 3 50g pellets.

My Huntsman has a barrel that measures 26 inches from the breech to the end of the barrel. If you consider that the breechplug takes up about an inch and a half the actual barrel is only 24 1/2 inches long. The barrel on my Omega is actually almost a full 26 inches as they made the barrel long enough that there is 26 inches of barrel in front of the breechplug. The QLA takes about 3/4 inch away from the full length if you only consider rifled barrel as the length. Apparently there is not a standard that says barrel length should be the functional rifled portion of the barrel not the overall length. Somewhat misleading???
