3030 Zero
« on: January 12, 2007, 12:51:02 PM »
I'm just curious about where you guys that think a 3030 is still a good rifle zero your rifle. No, I'm not talkin about the range you go to, or country road out by the city dump you go to shoot.
Example;  My 50 year old Winchester Model 94 (bought new in 1957) is zeroed at 2"s high at 50 yards.  This puts me a little over 3 1/2 " high at 100 yds, 3" high at 150 yds and zero at 200 yds. If I move the Lyman receiver sight up 1 notch, I am now zero at 300 yards. Now I don't care if you think I shouldn't be shootin at stuff that far with a 3030, so save that part for someone else. I regularly pratice on 1 gallon jugs of water at 270 yards and I don't miss much. I get about the same reaction from the jug at that range with my 3030 as with a TNT HP out of my 2506. I not ancient but I'm old enough, and have been shootin it long enough to know it will do the job at that range if I do mine. I'm not a gun magazine writer fan.
So, with that said, where do you have your 3030 zeroed at?
Oh! By the way. I shoot a reload. Always have. It's a 150 jacketed soft point, in front of 39 grains of Win 748 and a Federal primer. Have been reloading the 3030 since 1971.

Dee:  I set my 30-30 zero for 100 yds and account for bullet drop if I am shooting beyond that distance.  I only go for a 100 yd zero because I don't have clear shots beyond that.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your zero-ing techniques - hey, there are a couple of guys on Graybeards who shoot their 30-30s to 500 yds on the silhouette courses, so the caliber will hit that far out but whether it will take a whitetail at that range is another question.  HTH.  Mikey.

My rifle is zeroed at 100 yards and so is my Contender pistol.  My deer stand only lets me shoot out to about 75 yards anyway.

My marlin 336W is zeroed at 100 yards.  I can't even hunt with a rifle in my state and when I've traveled to other states I've never hunted where I'd have more than a 100 yard shot.

The fartherest I have ever had to shoot on a deer was about 325 yds. and I did that with a 308. I use this particular zero on my 3030 because I don't even have to think about holdover, out to about 230 yards. Just put it where you want it. At 270 yards its about a 7 inch holder.
