Scope rail on shotgun barrel ?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but will a Weaver #82 base work and fit fine on a drilled and tapped 20ga smoothbore barrel?
I have the hammer spur already on its way, and am trying to stay a liitle cheaper than the NEF scope rail.
Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks  :)

It will work, but the mounting options are limited in comparison, the rear 1" of the rail can't be used, and addition cross slots will most likely be needed which can be done. You can see the difference in the Centerfire FAQs and Help sticky. If you use a long eye relief shotgun scope, the Weaver rail will work better, I have one on a Handi, I cut one additional cross slot in it with a dremel burr, but a file and or hacksaw will work also, the aluminum is easy to work.

Thanks Tim, for the info and about the stickies.  My questions are so simple and downright common, there must be a sticky somewhere  ;)
I think I'll try to pick up a used nef rail so mounting options are greater--the pic in the sticky really showed the difference.
