commander question

 can you take the frame of a full size 1911 and put a commander slide on it

thats what a commander is. A 4 inch slide on a full sized frame.

Lloyd, I don't want to question you, but I really think the Commander dust cover on the frame is just a tad (1/4" or so) shorter.  I'm not able to check until I get home.  But I remember buying a Federal Ordance Gov't frame years ago and fitting a Caspian Commander slide to it and I had to trim back the cover a little to match them up.  My son now has that gun.  44 Man

44's right, the Commander dust cover is about 3/8 short.

Not only is the dust cover shorter, but the frame face the recoil spring guide rests against is further back as well by about 3/16 inch I recall, to allow a bit further slide travel.  If you put a Commander slide on a govt. frame you will short stroke the slide and may get poor ejection.  It will also over compress the recoil spring.

Yes, kinda', but the recoil spring will show between the short dust cover and the slide, and it could bind on an edge without a full length guide rod.  The stroke will also be a hair long, but no harm.

It's one way to make a lightweight govt, if you use the alloy frame.
