Questions on (a) standard sights and (b) stocks for Sporster
« on: January 25, 2007, 04:19:04 AM »
Good Day:

I'm planning on getting two Sporsters in .22 lr.

Concerning sights: I would like one with the standard iron sights that are shown in the current catalog and one on which I will mount a scope. Is the current year model also drilled and tapped for scope mounts or should I seek an older model (2006?) that came with the scope mount as standard?

Concerning stocks: I'm a bit of a traditionalist and prefer a wood stock. Am I correct that all NEF rifle stocks are interchangeable? Specifically thinking of the straight grip stock used on the Buffalo Classic series.

Thank you.

all the stocks will interchange with the exception of the 10 Gauge shotgun stocks, the straight stocks and the Buff Classic stocks will fit. The Sportsters are drilled and tapped for a scope rail. I mounted iron sights on my 2 year old .22 LR Sportster when I got it a couple of years ago and replaced the the stocks with wood at the same time. It makes a great little gun for squirrels and crows in the backyard with Super Colibris. The older adult model .22 LR Sportsters came with a scope rail only and no provision for mounting iron sights. I had to have my gunsmith D&T the barrel and then mount a set myself....<><.... :)

I just called H&R and they indicated that the Sporster 22lr is drilled and tapped (eventhough there is no mention of it in the 2007 catalog).
However, it no longer comes with the sope rail as it did in previous years.

I ordered one from Walmarts last weekend and hopefully it will be here by next weekend.
When it arrives, I'll update this post to confirm whether or not it was D&T.

H&R Ultra Slug Hunter (12 ga.)
NEF SS Sidekick Muzzleloader (50 cal.)
Remington 870 Express (12 ga.)
Stevens 311-H SxS (20 ga.)
CZ 452 American (22lr)

The reason previous Sportsters came with a scope rail (it was attached to the gun at the factory) is the gun did not come with iron sights. You had to put a scope on it OR have it D&T for iron sights yourself then buy sights and put them on as I did. It is a better deal now with the sights, it's much cheaper and easier to just put a scope rail on the already D&T barrel. And I like the idea of a simple break open iron sighted .22 LR rifle, it's a great gun to shoot and keep handy....<><... :)
