Question on the 40 S&W & 45 ACP
« on: January 24, 2007, 05:36:42 AM »
Starting to handload for the 40 S&W and the 45 ACP. Noticed in some of my loading manuals that one says to lightly roll crimp and another manual says not to roll crimp. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I taper crimp all my .45acp loads. The taper crimp is easier on the brass than the roll crimp.
Don't load for .40 S&W, so couldn't help with it.

.45 Acp headspaces on the mouth of the case. Roll crimping shortens the case and leads to fail to fire from weakened firing pin strike. DON'T. The taper crimp forces the sides in without shortening ...
Not sure about the 40 S&W. As I recall it is straight, no rim, and no shoulder, so I suspect it headspaces on the mouth too... luck
