Here's to old guns and long walks.

I cant believe another hunting season has almost passed. There's still late muzzleloader season here but that's the end. I have'nt got to hunt much this year but I have taken my old topper deluxe slug on a few evening treks through the woods. I've aimed a few times but sooting a doe 50 yards into a briar patch 15 minutes before dark isn't something I do anymore. It's enough for me to know that I could shoot the deer to get my blood pumping. Next year I'm definitely going to spend a lot more time in the woods as it will be right out my back door. There is something special about picking up a single shot like my old 20ga topper deluxe model 192 and quietly walking down the well worn path I tred with my Father, Grandfather and great Grandfather before they all passed on. I have guns that belonged to all of them  and when I grab one of those old guns and take a walk it's like they are there with me. Here's to old guns and long walks

I understand and agree. And somewhere in those old memories there are old dogs, many long gone.

Your story takes me back to when I was a boy following my gramps through the woods on a cold fall day.  My gramps was a simple man and never needed for anything fancy.  His rifle of choice was a well worn Remington 740 in 30-06.  "All the gun you'd ever need" he would say.  Year after year he would carry that old rifle on the same game trails with me hot on his heels each step of the way.  My gramps is gone now but his "big gun" as I used to call it, is not.  That well worn 740 now occupies the #1 slot in my gun cabinet.  Each time I carry the old rifle I can't help but think back and smile a little.  Thank you for your post and for capturing something real.  As you rightfully put it "Here's to old guns and long walks."

Unfortunately, neither my Dad or either Grandpa did any hunting or shooting.  So i have no fond memories like yours, but i intend to change that with my kids and, Lord willin, my grandkids.

O yes, squirrel hunting with Granddad, back in the day, those are fond memories, even if he did get more game with the 22 than I did with the shotgun..Ha ha   8)

I know what you mean Markus,I've hunted the last 8 deer seasons with my dads old remington 700 30-06 carbine,the sling I chose to put on was bought by a favorite uncle in the 1950s,a military leather sling.Nothing fancy,but when I'm hunting and sitting on the deer stand just looking at that combination sure warms the heart!Always brings back so many good memories of them both.
