receiver sights for Yugo M48
« on: January 28, 2007, 06:48:09 PM »
Anybody know a GOOD 'smith who can drill and tap a Mauser for a receiver sight?  I'm thinking about a commercial Mauser peep sight on the bridge or a conventional Williams or Redfield target peep.  I had a so-called "gunsmith" drill and tap the side of an SKS once so I could solidly mount a scope base. He botched the job, one hole went in crooked and he wallowed it out trying to fix it. Sad. Ruined the rifle.  I need someone who can put the sight on square and right.
I guess I could send the barrelled receiver anywhere in the country.
Anybody else have any ideas?  Unconventional, maybe? Modifications of other rifles sights, like M1 carbine or Enfield #4?  Those #4 peeps are GREAT. I'm not wanting a Mojo sight, as I MAY want to put a scope up there on the original sight base in future. Remember, Col. Jeff Cooper said a scope is not necessary to a scout rifle, but good peeps (esp. ghost rings) are.

The gunsmith could have tig welded the hole shut and started over. Or gone to larger screws.

I'm gonna guess that the job you're suggesting could be done at home with a hand drill and the proper sized drill and tap.  However, to answer you question, I would imagine just about any smith could do the job for you so you shouldn't have to ship the rifle anywhere.  Where are you located?

I'm in Houston, Texas - I'd be hesitant to try any gunsmith unless I knew his work was firstclass.

There should be more first class gunsmiths in your area than in most, considering how many scoped hunting rifles there are in TX.  Gander Mt.  has stores all around and probably in your area too.  They do general gunsmithing work on site and do it pretty compentently.

Rio,
You might go to your favorite gun shop and ask them if they would recommend a local gunsmith.  Might even ask at several gunshops.  They will probably have a reliable smith in mind.

PS:  Last year I had a Williams reciever sight put on an Ishapor Enfield....one of my better moves.
