Blaser straight pull
« on: January 02, 2007, 05:22:21 AM »
Hy everybody!
I have to buy a bolt action as my multi pourpose rifle and I have African PG in my mind for the next hunting trip. Since here in Italy it’s not easy to get a custom one like the Montana Rifleman, I have to stick with the factory ones and I was thinking about the Blaser R93 in either 30.06 or 300WM.  It’s made by Sig Arms with the highest standards, light, handy and it’s the shortest (with 22 “ barrel) I have found. But my gunsmith told me that, since it is a straight pull with a particular action and not a classic turn and pull, I might have problems with the action jamming in case of cartridge overpressure.
Now, have you ever seen it used in Africa or in other demanding hunting situations? Do you think It would be still reliable used with an optional barrel in 375HH?
Thank you

A hunter of mine named Walter used one on his trip. He had some problem with it as I recall but try as I might I cannot remember what it was. It seems like an extraction issue but It's just been too long, and too many hunters to pin point the issue for me.

I would not automatically discount the Blaser, but certainly take the advice of an expert gunsmith if you have one.

Because it's a switch barrel gun in RSA you should have the barrels seriial numbered. In RSA the barrel is considered the gun, not the action. IF you bring a Blaser with two barrels that's your limit. You cannot bring in a blaser with two barrles and another gun. They consider that three guns.

Ok, I think I'll try it. My other option was a Sauer 202 Mountain version, but with the same overall lenght it has a 2'' shorter barrel.  Thanks a lot JJ

I got to handle Blaser rifles at the recent SCI convention in Reno, NV.  I was very impressed with the engineering of them and, from the experienced users of them, have gotten the impression that they're very accurate, durable and dependable.  I am going to be getting one, hopefully soon, in 300 Weatherby Magnum.

If the source of your Blaser is from the market in Europe, the barrels will be serial numbered.  The barrels sold in the U.S.A. have no serial numbers.
