Heard a new one today.....
« on: January 26, 2007, 04:23:53 PM »
Have a friend that was shooting his Encore with a 300 Win Mag barrel.  On the second shot the stock broke on recoil, ripped his shirt and left some road rash on his shoulder.

I have heard of Encore stocks breaking many times and have had one break myself, but they were all wood stocks.  This one was a synthetic :o.  First time I had heard of a synthetic breaking.

I have been shooing Encores since they first came out, I have never seen that happen. I also have not heard of anyone locally with that problem either. I shoot rounds from 22-250 to the 416 Rigby and never seen it.

I would hate to have that happen to me.  :o

Chances are it was either poorly made at the factory or was damaged prior to shooting.

How are these made?  Are they injection molded plastic, or are they laid up fiberglass or similar?

They are injection molded plastic.  I've heard several stories about the walnut and laminate stocks breaking at the wrist.  Only one other story about the plastic ones breaking......if I recall, it was out west and very, very cold.  He dropped the rifle and the stock shattered.

As everyone knows Butt stocks are held with one large bolt. must make sure that bolt is tight all the times, or it will have a tendacy to crack especially with large caliber rifles

A poster on another forum stated that the tupperware versions can crack at the seam of
the injection molding.

Some say tighten the bolt too tight, wood stocks can crack. It only stands to reason that
if the bolt is too loose, recoil can be a real crack maker. As for me, I must have done
something wrong twice, for I am in the process of repairing my second wood stock.....
one, a laminate, and the second is factory walnut. The laminate has received some
wicked recoil since its repair and is holding very well, so I'm hopeful the walnut will be
stronger than original, also.
