Author Topic: What do you call Remington's Extractor? (Read 1148 times)

Wondering what we call Remington's extractor that is recessed into the perimeter of the bolt face? Many folks say this is the weak link of Remington Rifles. Anyone know of any associated failures?

So what is this called? I've tended to use the term "phantom extractor" because it's so hard to find, and before I was familiar with it, I thought a 710 was defective for not having an extractor.

And how long have they been using this extractor on all centerfire rifle models?

If its the weak link in the chain I guess I have the best chain in the country, I have owned several and know of several people who own nothing but Remingtons and have never, repeat never had or had a aquaintance have one go bad or fail, I am sire it is possible as anything is possible but I wouldnt let that one thing stop me from buying a Remington I wanted, you can do alot worse when chosing brands but thats another post.

Ditto what Jim said. I have read about folks replacing them with a Sako extractor but that entails cutting into the bolt face and you lose the "three rings of steel".
As posted, I have a lot of them and have been shooting them for over 50 years without a problem.

Glad you've all had great experiences with Remingtons. I too have friends that own nothing else. Still wouldn't mind knowing what a good term would be for Remington's extractor.

Well there's a name for a claw extractor, heck I thought phantom extractor was pretty sharp myself :lol: , actually I might have heard it elsewhere but am not really sure. Maybe crescent extractor? I still like phantom extractor though... :wink:

Let's see, as the old saying goes, Let me count the names! Cheap, tinny, flimsy, fragile, just to name a few. And yes I know of a few that have broke and had the Sako repair(Sako extractor installed) done to them. Lawdog

It is still an extractor. A different type than a Mauser type claw extractor, but an extractor nonetheless.

Have to agree with LD about the other names.

i think i have heard it described as a c-clip extractor since it sorta looks like that from the front.

I've had to replace two of them over the years. I'm 43 BTW.

I've always called them "spring steel extractors" because of their shape. Being curved steel, they appear to "spring" outward against the bolt recess in order to stay in place. Hence...the name spring steel extractor.

Without a doubt, I would say Remington's weakest flaw is their trigger/safety design.

Well, I broke my first Remington C-clip extractor. So I'm at the mercy of those who've been there before me. The rifle is a Rem 7600 chambered in 35 Remington.

Well, you're a first to me. If you were here, I'd buy you a cigar. All of the other broken Remington extractors I've heard of were: "a friend's bro-in-law's uncle was talking to a guy in a bar who said his cousin told him........."

DEPENDABLE,i own several 700s and I shoot often,havnt seen one fail to extract or break yet.

+1,Like others have said,I've heard of a friends, brothers, cousin, that either had one break,or the bolt handle fall off in there hand.When pressed about it so I could see it,the story changed.So I've never seen it either and I own and hunt with 4 right now with one built in 62 and one in 71.But I'm going to chance it and keep using them.

I own several 700's models (ADL - BDL). Some are old and some are new. I've never had an issue with one. -g

I've got a 742 in 30-06, and 700's in 270, 280, 7mm-08, and 308. Never had a problem. Only Remington extractor problem I've ever had was with a Sportsman 58 in 16 ga. about 45 years ago. I remember my mom had to drive be to the gunsmiths shop.
