The Copperhead
« on: August 03, 2011, 03:48:50 AM »
I usually don't show much here, but I kind of like this design.  Slender skinner with a point  treatment that can allow some relatively fine work.  Works upside down if you're careful.
Steel is 3/32 inch CPM154CM Mirror Polished.  Handle is Stabilized California Burl with copper and nickel silver trim.  4.5 inch blade.

Joel,

Have you ever used that design knife for skinning or cutting? It really looks like it would be awkard to use to me.  :o  The handle looks like it could use a melt job..too blocky for my tastes as well. But to each his own I guess.  ;)

The handle is quite well rounded enough, thank you, it just doesn't show well in the photos.  Apparently you're not familiar with the original Nessmuk, since the lines on this knife pretty much match those exactly.  The only difference is the slimness of the blade and the fine point...which works quite well BTW in tight places.  You also apparently aren't familiar with any of the Green River butcher knives or some of the very useful Persian blades that use the same profile and have been in use for hundreds of years.  I've been using knives for around 60 years, and have tried just about everything,  trust me, I wouldn't have spend hours mirror polishing this blade unless it was worth it.  I do own the Nessmuk I used to design the profile BTW. and this particular knife sold in 12 minutes flat. To each his own though, as you say.

I just went through all the pic Joel, and all I can say is WOW! :o   What beautiful knives!  I got a bunch of ideas I want to try just from looking at them!   ;D

I've been thinking about putting a Nessmuk together but have 3 others I need to do first.   :-\

Did not mean to ofend you Joel.  ;)  I simply stated my opinion. I to have been using knives for 60 years. And that knife looks nothing like the green river butcher knives. I've owned them, orgionals as well as current mfg. In fact I have one in the drawer right now.  ;)  However just because I don't like it dosen't mean others can't.

I generally like drop point belt knives. And pocket knives.

As a skinny little fellow I think G.W.S. would have approved of you skinny 'Nessmuk' (if I squint just so at mine, a fairly faithful J.Lauters custom I can see the overlay with yours, and appreciate the very useful sharp point mod).
I dont have the 60yrs. use (not quite) of you chaps but Im still re-evaluating and looking for that elusive perfect design, and dont really have much use anymore for a large skinner.

:) Joel, Nice slim design.  Bet it works well on Whitetails.  Do you heat treat your blades?   Been using an Evenheat digital oven  for the last 13 yrs.    I use it for 440C,D2,  01, 1095,and 1084(old stock).  Best Wishes.
