For the most part everyone in ohio uses slug guns because the clowns in the state cap. think CF rifles are to dangerous , but we can use them to hunt just about everything else .  ???

I use a H&R single shot slug barrel or a 6" ruger single six in 357 mag. , just never got into MLs .

Pistol- either gp100, or .45 colt bisley

Muzzleloader-.50 huntsman with 4x simmons scope

It all depends on the season, and what kind of mood I'm in, but I just never liked having to shell out $2 a shot when I can reload my shells for my pistol for a few cents a shot, and kill a deer just as well....I guess I'm cheap that way.

In gun season I use a handgun, usually an Encore .357 max., but have carried several different guns. Mostly .44 mags., .454`s or .500 S&W`s lately, but befor the .454 came out it was all .44 mag., and befor it was legal a muzzle loader. Never liked slug guns as they were just not accurate enough to suit me. I guess they got some out now that shoot better than they used to, but they will still not shot with my handguns.

for the short, poor excuse for a muzzeloader season that Ohio has I use a Leonard Day Swivel breech 50 caliber.

this year I started using the ML exclusively during the deer gun season- the slug guns I had used in the past just were not accurate enough for me.

Depending on the area being hunted , type of hunting , or what mood I'm in . I use the following for deer hunting in Ohio :

T/C Encore 209X50
H&R Ultra Slug Hunter 12 ga.
Dan Wesson 414 Supermag
S&W Performance Center Hunter 44 Mag
Freedom Arem Model 83 454 Casull
Remington 11-87 12 Ga.

Well lets see,

I normally use a Ruger .41 mag, Ithaca 37 12 ga. with slug barrel, or an old CVA inline in .50cal .
IF we had a rifle season I would more than likely use the 45-70 either in my H&R or my Rolling block loaded with blackpowder.

I disagree that everyone uses slug guns. I know alot that use muzzleloaders during gun season.

Granted not all the deer are taken with a shotgun , but when you look at the numbers only 12% were taken with a ML , that is way up from 20 years ago when it was only 5% .

But for the most part , people in ohio still use the shotguns .

I use to hunt with a shotgun many moons ago. However the first year they let us hunt with pistol here in Ohio I switched over and never looked back. It took me a couple of years to settle on the Contender, but for me it's the total package. I took a few deer with a Colt Trooper .357 Mag. and a S/W 629 .44 Mag. and they did fine. The Contender was more accurate for me and felt better in my hand. I will also use the Omega Muzzleloader too.

  • T/C Contender 12" barrel scoped (Hunter Package) .44 Mag
  • T/C Omega Muzzle Loader 50 Cal.

Ohhh, so many guns and so little time to buy them.  :)

The 12% refers to just the muzzleload season not to the regular gun season. I've never seen Ohio publish what percent of deer are harvested by MLs in gun season. Also percent harvested doesn't neccesarily reflect the percent using MLs.  Again I know alot of hunters that use MLs during guns season. If I had to guess it's probably around 20%

Ruger .45 Colt or ruger SRH .454 during gun season.
TC .54 Renagade during ML
they all make a big hole and I don't have to track them down.
