H&R shotgun bead thread size?
« on: January 29, 2007, 06:08:53 AM »
I posted this in the NEF forum, but this may be a better place.

What size drill and tap do I need to move the bead to it's new location?

Thanks

They range from 3x56, 5x40, 6x40, and 6x48.. If you've taken out the existing bead, simply measure and go from there.. I find 6x40 common on guns made over seas and 3x56 common for center beads and 5x40 a common size for US made guns.. Be aware that some makers don't thread beads into barrels any more. They drill  a tapered hole and press the bead in place(perhaps a little super glue??). Sometimes they install a circular crimp around the installed bead to retain it. I usually just drill to the next size that will clean up the hole, tap and install a replacement..

If you don't have the beaad that was in the hole to measure then simply buy whatever size/shape of bead you want and the installation tools.. If the hole was really small and threaded it was likely a 3x56.. Brownells sells the bits and taps for this size and if you want the have beads of various flavors also..

Carlson's offers the beads, drill and tap in one package for $10.
