Getting closer to first coyote score
« on: January 28, 2007, 05:13:43 PM »
I was on about my 12th set tonight. Temp about 5 above. I was hunting fading daylight/moonlight to straight moonlight. I was sitting on the brush watching over a frozen pond. I used a Knight&Hale cottontail squaller and a Crit'r standard. I had a coyote running back and forth in the brush at about 150 yards. I couldn't get him to come out on the snow covered ice. If I had just a bit more moonlight. I was hunting across about a 5mph wind. My reed must have been frozen to the body of the Crit'r. When I went to blow it it screeched like when my daughter was learning to play clarinet, lol. Last weekend I had one come in to about 80 yards. He must have busted me. I saw the tracks though. If I had been looking at that spot through my scoped Win Mod 670 .30/06 I would have had him though. Hopefully next year I have a Mauser .220 swift. I will keep plugging at it. I at least want to try tanning one hide this year. Any suggestions are appreciated. I have no mentor in this, I am learing on the net and in the woods.

Looks like you are getting in the ball park and the best thing that I can say is to keep at it.
When you are calling, try to look at everything in general and nothing in partiicular making sure to use all of your peripial vision. You will be suprised at how quickly you can pickup movement when practicing this. those Coyotes blend in so well that subtle movement will be your best que.
If you move your head at all, do it slowly like you have a stiff neck as the Coyote also picks up movement quickly!

Sounds like you are doing ok all in all. You did have the one that wouldnt cross the ice but the 150yds sounds like fair rifle range. Might have brought it in closer with some coaxing with a squeaker or even lighter higher pitched calling. You will get used to reading their intent via the reactions that you are seeing as you call more and more in.
Bad part is that now you are hooked and you may be doing this the rest of your life. ;D

I do believe you are correct in the hooked department. We should have a whole bunch more moonlight this weekend. It seems as though I am inclined to hobbies and interests that are out of the norm. Good thing I enjoy my own company. This weekend I will probably be the only guy in the woods coyote hunting at -15F.
