300 whisper in the deer woods.
« on: December 02, 2002, 10:47:03 AM »
Congrats on the two deer. Thanks also on the report of the performance of the 300 Whisper. I am new to Contenders and my only barrel right now is a 10 in. whisper. I have only shot it a few times with some reloads that I got with it when I bought it. I cant wait to try some loads of my own and eventually take deer with it.

Thanks for the great report and congratulations on your success.
I'm restricted here in IL, in the January handgun season to cartridges less than 1.4" case length.  The Whisper is legal, as is my 30 Bellm.

I plan to hunt my Encore 30 Bellm this year, but have been unhappy with the accuracy so far.  I just picked up a used Contender 10" Whisper barrel and just sent it off to Virgin Valley for installation of their six screw  scope base.  I bought 2 boxes of Cor Bon ammo with the 150 gr. bullet.  I chrono'd it at 1820 fps and shot a 1 3/8"  three group, with open sights, at 60 yds.  Some quick handloads I put together with Remington 125 gr. bullets and 296 powder were not so accurate, but went 2100 fps.  My barrel has a 1-8" twist.

I'll be mounting a Burris 2-7X when the Whisper returns, the same scope as on the 30 Bellm.  One of these barrels will be my primary Illinois deer gun.  The runner up will be seen in the classifieds.

Any idea how fast your load with the 130 hornady is going?

Other than considering the shooter what do you believe is the effective range for deer sized game with the 300 wisper??  Just curious cause I never really thought of it for deer but it sounds like it worked great.

Thanks

Gary T. took two does with his .300 Whisper last one and the farthest lasered at 197 yds..shot with 125 grain BT's if I recall correctly.I'm carrying mine (14" Custom Shop),but have yet to get a shot..too bad we don't have a fall turkey season!!!

I bought some Remington 150 gr. 30/30 bullets to try out of my 10" 300 Whisper.  Anyone know what velocity is needed to expand these?
