Gould mould for 45 (Long) Colt?
« on: January 15, 2007, 03:31:15 PM »
I am thinking of using the .458 330 gr. gould hp mould for my 45 Colt lever action Winchester and Ruger revolver.  Anyone ever try this?  Anyone have a suggested load for such a heavy bullet in the 45 Colt case?

ive loaded the 340 lyman and lee .458 bullets in the 45 colt by sizing them down to .454 Did this many years ago but if i remember the lee bullet shot real well. KInd of tough on the star sizer though so if you want to do alot of it id recomend you buy maybe a 455 lee sizer and size them in it with your single stage press first then run them through your lube sizer to lube and get your final size.

Thanks for the reply Lloyd.  Can you give me a suggestion as far as a load goes?  I can't find anything in loading manuals for a bullet that heavy in the 45 Colt.

His is a good recomendation. I will not share loads anymore with people i dont personaly know. Nothing personal. There are just to many sourses out there now that are reputable to give out info that is not actually tested as safe.

Isn't that how Elmer had his Colt SAA let go?

I seem to recall his story about using them unsized over a "case full" of black powder.

Hard to imagine Elmer Keith hotloading a cartridge case isn't it!

At least it wasn't a "hatfull" of powder!

hicard,

The 330 gr. Gould bullet shoots very well in my '94 Marlin Cowboy.  Here is a discussion we had about that very subject:

Have fun!
