Leverevolution bullets for 30-30
« on: January 23, 2007, 08:48:37 PM »
I was just wondering what is the largest game up to 200 yards that the 160 gr.  Leverevolution bullets can take?  The reason I am asking is becasue I have a Marlin 336W and a Remington 700 in .30/06 I got a great deal on (I am sure you all can relate) but I live in IL so I can't hunt deer with either rifle.  I am trying to decide whether or not to sell the 700 (I am definitely keeping the Marlin) and get a Super Blackhawk which I can use during the firearm season.  I figure if I am ever lucky enough to get to go somewhere to hunt something other than and bigger than deer, the Marlin with Leverevolution bullets should be fine for something like an Elk, right?

I've killed black bear with 170 gr. 30-30 loads, but elk? I'd probably want the '06.

cherokee75 -

ratltrap and I don't seem to agree on anything about the LeverEvolution ammo but I agree with him on this - if you're "ever lucky enough" to go hunt elk, take the .30-06. A rare elk hunt represents a big investment in time and money for non-residents - don't handicap yourself with a .30-30, regardless  of the ammo.

I've hunted elk with a .44 Mag carbine, 7mm Mag, .300 Win Mag, .375 Win and .45-70.  In the future I will probably use my .30-30, too.   But I get to hunt every year and have been at it for 25 years - if I choose to carry a short range rifle and have to pass up a long range shot its no big deal.  And its happened more than once, the result being a trip back home with no meat for the freezer.

"Gun lovers have their own guns and it is not well to argue with them. For many years I carried restocked Springfields, Mausers and others. Now I carry a 30-30 Winchester carbine with sling. The much improved cartridge in this weapon will stop a moose or a bear without trouble. The gun is small, light, has good balance for carrying, and is convenient. For safety the sling is looped around a thwart in a canoe and around a cross bar or a lash rope on a dog sled."

I would have no problem using a 30-30 for elk.....

As reported by Jason H

"I shot this Ungava Bay carabou with Hornady's 160-gr, 30-30 LEVERevolution ammunition"

Or Wayne van Zwoll

"I took this bull elk at 55 yards.  He was a very big bull, and I fired 3 times, though the first bullet was leathal.  You don't take chances with elk in heavy cover."

We can read in gun rags that you need a much more powerful cartridge for taking such game.  But early on the 30-30 was all anyone had in the woods of the North West or Canada's BC or the Yukon etc... get the picture.  The Rocky Mountian Elk Foundation still have a couple of mounts that were taken here in Montana with the good ol 30-30.

Will the 30-30 work, sure it will... but are there better suited cartridges now in our time, you bet.  Used within its limits the 30-30 will work and work well as the photo's show it will.
