.32ACP, .32 S&W Long
« on: February 09, 2007, 05:31:43 AM »
I have some questions and I wonder if anybody has done this. I have a late teens production .32 Hand Ejector in .32 S&W Long. I also have several .32ACP Autos. I also have .32ACP dies. I know I can load .32 short and .32 long with these dies if I have the right shell holder, which I do. The problem is a I have tons of .32ACP brass and none of .32 short or .32 long. I think .32ACP brass will fit in my revolver, but I've also been told that standard .32ACP loads are too high of pressure for my old revolver. Does anybody load light, lead bullet loads in .32ACP brass? I could buy some .32 Long brass, but then I would constantly be changing my dies. If I could load just .32ACP, it would make life easier. Any experience or views on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

The 32 acp is rimmless, where the 32 short-long are rimmed.  the 32 acp headspaces on the forward case edge where the rimmed cases use the rim to set the headspace.  I don't think that you would be able to uses the 32 acp in you hand ejector.

I think the .32 acp is technically called semi-rimmed.  I am looking at one right now, the rim does extend beyond the case sides, so it may chamber and headspace on your older S&W, but not by much.  I also have one of these older Smiths, and it is one of my favorites.  If indeed the pressures are too high on 32 acp, I would be leery of accidentally putting the wrong loaded (full power) 32 acp loads  in it.  I would suggest just getting a set of cheap Lee dies for your 32 long.  Thats what I load with. I think they run in he 20-odd dollar range, and come with a shellholder. Thats probably the safest thing to do.  As an aside, the extra bullet jump from shooting the acp's in the S&W probably won't help accuracy, and those little hand ejectors can be amazingly accurate.  Mine will shoot well under 1-1/2" at 25 yds. with handloads.  If your Smith is a fixed sight gun, the sights are probably regulated for around 100 grain bullets anyways, probably heavier than the 71 grainers you normally load in the auto's, meaning it would probably shoot pretty low.  Hope this helps.

I'm not recommending you do this but........

I had a Ruger SSM in 32 H&R and a Berreta in 32 ACP.  I loaded light cast bullets loads in 32ACP case and fired them without a problem in my Ruger.

Hodgdon lists the 32 Auto @ 14000CUP with a 71 gr. FMJ and the 32 S&W Long @ 8100 to 12000 CUP for the 85 to 98 gr, bullets

L.L.

The 32 S&W is too short for the 32 S&W Long dies to work , they will size ok , but the bell and seater dies are too tall to reach the case , Lee even lists the 32 S&W as a seprate die set .
