They could build a 4" Redhawk, but the 5 1/2" is pretty darn close as it is.

Ruger typically over engineers everything they build.  Yes, they make some of the strongest frames and actions in the industry.  Unfortunately, with strength comes weight, so I don't think we will be seeing any mountain weight frames from Ruger.  Too many folks have grown accustomed to overloading the Rugers without worry because of the strength, loads that would tear a Smith mountain gun apart.

I've got a 5" 45 Colt Redhawk that gets carried on my backcountry jaunts stoked with Buffalo Bore class loads for bear.  A good holster will go along way to making in more comfortable to carry.  I hardly even notice mine anymore.

I think Youkon Jack has it right.  I dont know if Ruger could make a Mountain type double action. With that being said I think the single actions in magnum calibers and 45 Colt are some of the best backup guns there are.  I am very fond of a pair of 4 5/8ths 41 mags.  I dont think that a more powerful/strong hangun could be had in that weight class.  I also had one in 45 colt on that barrel length that was a blast.
I carried one of those 41's to Alaska a few years ago for bears.  I had it loaded to the gills with a Buffalo bore 275 grain hardcast bullet....I never felt underguned.

I believe Ham Bowen builds something similar called the Alpine, on a Redhawk. It's real sexy and real expensive!

In a way they already do.  I picked up a 2.25" Ruger SP101 in .357 and even with full house loads, it is not too bad to shoot with one hand.  With a Bianch thumbreak belt holster, it is hardly noticable.

Before that I used to carry a Blackhawk .45 covertable with the .45COLT cylinder inplace.  With the 4 5/8 barrel, it felt lighter than my old Colt Government model.  It was a bit more bulky than the SP101 though.

Now I just carry the SP101.  I use a pocket holster in warm weather when I dont wear a jacket, and the holster when I have it covered.

Both of these are in the $350 range, and they are useful for hunting, or personal protection too.  Plus they are tough enough to last the rest of my life, and then be just as useful for my son.

I guess I'll just look for someone to cut a Redhawk down to 4 inches if not able then to as close to that as possible or buy a Mountain Gun.  I'm gonna have a little 'extra' money in the future so, guess I have to start looking for a reliable, experienced, local Gunsmith...

AA,

The Mountain Gun makes a good .44 Special, the Redhawk makes a good full house loaded .44mag/hot load .45 Colt. The SP101 makes a great carry/kit gun, any Blackhawk/Vaquero does it all-at a better price!
