These dogs hunted ground squirrels, rock chucks, foxes and rabbits on the Montana prairie.  Working one dog at a time they are good flushing dogs on hungarian partridge.  They will even retrieve.

When we got to Virginia and the squirrels started running up trees instead of down holes these dogs taught themselves to look up and follow the squirrels through the trees.

In the off season they are good house dogs.  If I sit down to read a book or watch TV  it's not uncommon for one to lay in my lap or in the chair beside me.  We let the first one sleep on the bed.  When we got three they started crowding in the bed and got booted from the bedroom.  Ever now and then the littlest will still sneak back in.

They are good watch dogs and will bark when they see some one approach the house. When you tell them "quiet" they will.

They are wonderful around children as long as you teach child and dog not to play rough  from the start.

They are eager to please.

One of the best parts is the they make tiny dog pile and are easy to clean behind.

Double D,
I have worked with Rat terriers and Jack Russels through my brother-in-law, as he raises and breeds them. they may have a pup or two. Thanks for re-opening my eyes to this great small breed.

Double D,
Got a pair of Rats rdy when i move into the house. Littermates and both are squirrely as all get out. How hard do you think it will be to make them inside dogs, as they have been kennel raised for nearly a year? Want to make them family dogs and companion dogs. Any pointers welcome. I have raised pups to the kennel and raised pups to the house, but never tried to bring a year old dog inside after being a kennel dog. Figure crate training and bonding should take care of it. Usually once they are your friend "your dog",  they will do anything to please you. Wish me luck.

Also found a Cur from a local hunter that is cross trained on coon and squirrel. Figure that should round out my kennel for now. Double D I am interested to know if you hunt your rat terriers or if they are just house pets.

Those cute little doggies make wonderful little houspets...take them to the field and they are vicious blood thirsty little killing machines.

Here in Virginia the total of their hunting has been to run squirrels up the tree  and get every dog in the neighborhood barking with them.  Hopefully this spring and summer we are going to get them out and work them.

While in Montana they hunted almost year round.  They will course rabbits untill they can't move (rabbits and dogs).  The Ground squirrels were there favorite game. They caught an killed hundreds of them a season and there ain't no season.  They also loved to chase fox and have killed them.  They also have taken Montana Roch chucks, cousin to the Eastern woodchuck.

I was in a book store just after I got my first one and found a book "101 Training Tips for you dog" by Kate Delano Condax.  I used the tips in the book for the house training and manners.  Our dogs a crate trained.  Be persistant and consistant.  Quick instant correction for wrong act followed by getting the dog to do something positive and lavishing praise.   My dogs know a loud sharp No!  is not a good thing and everything stops.  All that sort of stuff is in the in book...even tells you how to teach them to jump through hoops.

I must have missed your earlier post about getting a couple of Rat's good, just be patient.  Lots of priase and minimal but firm discipline.  I have never seen a more loyal dog than a rat terrier.
