I have a Dan Wesson 460 super mag and am trying to find some more info on it.

Well tell us a little more about it and we will try to help you out. I was not aware that Dan Wesson made any 460 Supermags. Are you sure it is not a model 460 which shoots the 460 Rowland with moon clips?

It is a 460 super mag. I know they only made a few before they were bought by CZ. It was never actually put into production. The serial number on this one is (EXP 460 SM 1). It was the first one. I have two barrels, a 6" compensated and a 10" HVR. The 10 has "D.J. Bushman cartridge designer" stamped on it. The empty brass is 2.25 inches.

It sounds like you do indeed have an experiemental 460 Supermag, according to the serial number. I was hoping they would put these into production. I have spoken to Bushman before. He did help Dan Wesson with research and development. If you ever want to get rid of it, you just let me know. Is it a five shot or a six shot? If you don't mind my asking, how did you come across such a rare weapon?

It is a six shot. I met a guy at a gun show in Co. that had it. I have tried to find more info on Bushman. All I could find was an article for Sierra bullets that showed him (I assume it was the same guy) with a deer he had shot with the 445 super mag. I would like to find some load data. I have almost 1,000 rounds of empty Brass.

I remember that gun, I was trying to get the coin together, negotiating with DJ when someone else got it. At that time I had a 7460, long since gone.

It is possible that the add you show posted here is from the same guy I bought it from. He said that he may advertise it on the internet. My wife is the one that bought it for me as a Christmas gift, after I told her about it. I will try giving Mr. Bushman a call. Thanks again

According to the article linked above, the Dan Wesson 460 Supermag is based on a lengthened 45 Win Mag case. The 45WM operates at 40,000 CUP while the S&W 460 Mag operates at 60,000 cup. Not only that, but the head on the 45WM is .004 smaller than the head dimension on the S&W 460. I would NOT try to shoot a S&W 460 in that gun.

I am not sure what the cylinder diameter is I will check later and get back to you. I already knew not to shoot 460 S&W from it. I have never shot it myself. I have plenty of brass, but have never loaded anything for it.

I spoke with Brad ar Dan Wesson today. I wanted to know about getting an 8 VH for this gun, he said they would be happy to do it for $260.00
I asked him if the cylinder dia. was the same as the other SM. It is the same. He also told me that there were 2 of these made. who knows where the other one is.

I'd love to see the brass for this gun, just as a cartridge collector. It sounds basically identical to the .455 Super Mag that Elgin Gates proposed and DW was supposedly planning to produce. Ballistics 250 grain Hornady over 36.5 grains 296 powder = 2015 fps, according to Gates. I can't remember what he used as the basis for that cartridge, he just said it was a "lengthened .45 Colt case", whatever that means, but stretched to 1.61" as I recall. So, if this .460 Super Mag is based on the .45 WinMag like the mentioned article said, then is it a rimless cartridge? Does it need clips to fire? Any info appreciated.

Wow, I reread this thread, and I didn't realize what you had. That's great! And here I've been lamenting the rarity of the 745. A little odd, though, that they didn't simply make a 454 Casull chambering, especially considering the pressures involved.

As much as I'd love one, I don't think I'd be able to afford it. How well made is it?

I assume it is at least as well made as the other Norwich Super Mags. I don't have anything to compare it to. I talked to Bryan at DW. He said that he made this one and one other. No one I have talked with knows where the other one is. As of this friday it will no longer be mine. I am trying to spend as much time carressing it as I can before it moves away.

I will leave it up to the new owner to let everyone know he has it if he wants to.

Hmmm, DJ Bushman is etched into the shroud. As I recall, he was a field tester/rep for Bob Serva's Dan Wesson. He had a couple of hunts with a .414 sm in OK and maybe Kansas. If you go out to the Hodgdon powder website, they have a success stories forum and I recall he had a post or two there. Not sure how you would get in touch with him. Mike Rowles was also heavily involved with Dan Wesson when Mr. Serva was getting it cranked back up. I also seem to remember a picture of a revolving carbine made off of a DW Frame. Probably not the best idea as the cylinder blast and any spitting would tend to get to the weak hand.

Thank you Travis for letting me be the new keeper of this gun, Its fit and finish is top notch. I will give a range report as soon as I can, the brass and dies should be here tomarrow. I ordered a new Bushnell Elite 3200 2x6 scope that will be here next week.
