I need some linotype

anyone know of a place in northern michigan or wisconson that has some squirreled away that would part with it at a resonable price. I wouldnt mind picking up a 1000 lbs.

I thought you might have been looking for a few pounds.
I have 2 bars of what I believe is linotype.
Together, they weigh between 9 & 10 pounds.

This stuff was cast by the Magnolia Metal Co. in NY
On the back, it's stamped "Pouring Temperature 900 degrees F.

I went through over 500 lbs just last year casting.

  chuck, the melting temperature of linotype is about 475 degrees. have you tried melting any of the stuff you have?

No, I haven't tried melting it yet.  Really don't need to, I make my cast bullets from straight wheel weights.

I double checked and on the back it's clearly stamped, "pouring temperature 900 degrees F.

Guess I don't know what the heck it is now.

Maybe it's what they call babbitt.  Stuff they use for bearings on some of the older slow moving equipment where they would use pillow block bearings, like field rollers, saw mills, etc.!

Can't scratch it with my fingernail, can shave it with a pocket knife!

be careful and melt it in a seperate pot from your casting pot as you may have some zinc ingots there.

No intentions of melting it, don't need it!

Guess it'll just be a conversation piece.

Maybe I'll do a little checking, we have a scrap metal recycling center not far from here.

  We had some babbit bearings at work . They melted at 800 degrees. Some of them made real nice bullets IF you had an oxy-acetylene torch handy
