Building a rifle
« on: January 12, 2007, 03:40:21 PM »
Hello I am in the process of looking to build a rifle. I have a 98 Mauser action, the barrel is shot out and the stock is chopped (not by me). I have been in contact with SSK about a 280 JDJ barrel blank. I would like to install a richards microfit thumbhole stock. I would like to know an average cost of machining and turning the barrel blank into a barrel and getting it onto the action. I will also have to upgrade the trigger, probably a timney, bend or change the bolt and have the reciver drilled and tapped. Does anyone else shoot this caliber or have any load info for it.

Thanks

If you don't need that exact barrel it looks like you could have a 280 barrel threaded turned and blued for about $100.  Lots of other new Mauser barrels if you look.  Larry.    Ebay:

A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

You did not specify which '98 action you had, but the link to the Ebay barrel has a small-ring thread. Most '98 actions have large ring threads. The Turks are a "large-ring" action with small ring threads. Before any purchases, make sure you buy to fir what you have or you can end up eating a barrel.

With the SSK proprietary cartridges, I can only assume they will "long-chamber" you a blank and then your smith will have to cut the barrel to the correct head space as no one would have a reamer? - not my first choice. Or you would have to have SSK fit the barrel to action.

If you are not stuck on the JDJ barrel and are looking for a reasonably priced one stop shop look at E R Shaw. They make and install barrels and do all the gunsmithing and bluing. They have their price list on the website so you can add up what everything would cost. Good prices and very friendly folks.

They have done work for me before and I think they make a good barrel for a hunting gun, but if I were building a sendero or some other rifle that needed 1/2" accurcy I might look elsewhere Like Hart, Shilien Krieger etc.
