Looking for suggestions?
« on: February 06, 2007, 11:44:01 AM »

A friend is looking for a semi auto rifle that does not have too much recoil, is center fire, and would be quite accurate up to 200 yards. I don't use anything in semi so I don't feel I should advice him.
What suggestion would you make for a decent rifle that isn't going to break the bank. I'm sure he will mainly punch holes in targets with it as opposed to hunting.
Any help would be appreciated.

Well in a new rifle you simply won't be able to buy a Semi automatic rifle accurate enough to be happy with off the bench for less than $600. Not if your serious anyway.

For not much more than that you get into your best options an AR15 or possibly a BAR

A remington 7400 is a good hunting rifle but not a target rifle by any stretch of the imagination

Target and Mini14-30 shouldn't be used in the same sentence.

With the criteria you give your best bet will be an AR15

You can buy the hottest semi-auto  buy on the planet right now for($350).  Its the Russian Izhmash Saiga.  Its an AK47 in a sporter wrapper, the russians focused on making it more accurate than its AK brothers and it is.  They come in 308 with a 16.5" barrel and a 22" barrel.  They also come in 223rem and 7,62x39 too.  Once you shoot one you will agree these guns are awesome.  Your buying the famous Russian AK47 action and its brand new not someones butchered rebuilt.  Its manufactured in Russia at Izhmash by the same people who manufacture the AK47.  You have to checkout there shotguns too there all on the AK platform and are dependable and reliable as an AK47.  There are guys on the net shooting there 308 saiga's out past 400yds with awesome accuracy.  We benchrested my first 308 saiga with the 16.5" barrel and using south african 308 ball ammo(surplus) we shot 1 1/2" groups takinmg turns with it.(my son and me) I was never fond of the 223 rem round but after shooting the 308 saiga i went back and purchased the saiga in 223 too.  The Russians did it again too the 223 is another awesome semi-auto for under $350. This gun has a battle proven design and its a brand spanking new russian izhmash AK47 and its the hottest gun to hit our shores ever since the chinese sks did in the late 70's.  Trust me you won't be sorry you purchased it.

Bill, that sounds like a good idea and certainly worth looking into. Do you know if there are any dealers in Florida?

Thanks Qajaq

I would go to www.raacfirearms.com and see who there distributors are in your area my two guns shops locally have them so most gun shops in your area should have them.

BTW;  I don't see the saiga sporter in 308 synthetic stk. on the raac website.  It was with the 7,62x39 and the 223 saiga's.  I was at my local dealer last weekend and he still had the 308 sporters so they still must be available here.  They did offer a skeleton stock in 308 that had a 16" barrel and its shorter than the sporter with the 16" barrel.  It looked really neat.
