Brooks firecracker cannon
« on: January 18, 2007, 01:35:10 PM »
I dont see a phone number for brooks to ask them, but could some one tell me how these work?  How does it shoot a firecracker?  Will it light the firecracker when the black powder goes off?  Or do you light both wicks carefully?  Wich end of firectacker goes in barrel? I was looking at thes and just cant figure it out.

Thanks
Brad

I don't know about those cannon in particular but with my 37mm's the lift charge ignites the fuse.
Therefore if you load the fuse end of the firecracker towards the propelling charge it should light the fuse with no problem.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

I think you use the firecracker as the main charge in these things.

I have one that the firecracker is the charge, fuse comes out the breech and the cracker mess is contained in the tube. Nice for garage shooting. Once, the first cracker went off and lodged in the muzzle. Not wanting to expend the effort to push it out, I loaded a second behind it. Was amazed at the power of a cracker when contained, blew the first one out with a loud report and considerable force.
I have another that you load with BP and put the cracker in fuse first. The BP lights the fuse and you get a little aerial detonation from the cracker. Timing is dodgy. Sometimes close to the muzzle, sometimes on the ground.
Always fun, MIKE

Brooks is a no-hastle vendor.

Look thru the "Backyard fun" thread. Probably half of the guns in the pictures on that thread are built with Brooks tubes.

pretty sweet. Does any one make a larger caliber firecracker cannon.  How could you get some distance with these?

Not much point to making a larger one! The Black cat is the largest CHARGEAllowed in the U.S. now.
Anything that is bigger is just more paper! (unless you DIY (NOT suggested, flash powder is NAASSTY!)
My son fired OUR brooks cannon 20 times at the S. pole and the firecracker went off 11 times Everbody loved it!
He only fired twice at the n. pole (Less time & less baggage)

I haven't been here in awhile. Seeing this post put a smile on my face. When Mike (a great guy) was bringing out these cannon I was privelged to help in the R@D dept.
The M-BPFC is the breechloading model pretty much the operating procedure is to place fuse in the touch hole, Pour approx 5 grains FFFg powder down the barrel, Tamp down, load the firecracker through the muzzel fuse facing the breach, slightly tamp and your ready to go.
I used to get some considerable distance (approx 20 yards) by adjusting the powder amounts and angle of the barrel. In this case more isn't better. having a stronger load will detonate the firecracker in the barrel.
The M-FC is the breachloader model. It was designed specifically to be just a noisemake But.. I gave one to my friends ten year old on the 4th While I was supervising I notice he would take a firecracker with a long fuse and place it in the breechplug with the fuse facing the muzzle, carefully screw on the breech plug so the fuse comes out the touch hole (propelling charge). Then take a second firecracker and load it through the barrel with the fuse facing the breech becoming the projectile. A firecraker launcher that doesn't require black powder. Maybe Mike should have hired the kid for R@D
