After playing with the Savage yesterday, I tried some projectiles suitable for an upcoming Spring black bear hunt. I've had this rifle for several months now and it keeps shooting better and better. I added the thumbhole stock and I believe, for whatever reason, it has helped accuracy. Using 100gr 777 ffg and a Barnes 250gr Expander, the first twelve bullets out of the gun did this with the center group being the first group.

The center group would have been better if I'd fired a fowling shot, shot one was the hole to the far left in the center group. The gun shot practically identical groups with the Speer GDSP 270gr .429 and Winchester Partition Gold 260gr. Add those three to the great shooting Winchester Platinum Tip 260gr and here is a rifle that isn't very finicky at ALL.

Mine actually shoots best with the Barnes 250 gr bullets and 100 gr FFG Triple seven. I generally keep them right around an inch with that load. When I shoot the Platinum tips I get similar groups to yours. I do have the thumbhole stock so maybe thats it. :wink:

I SHOULD have mentioned that there was some definite shooter fatigue going on as well. I got to the range at about 9AM and these groups were shot around 3:30PM. I just did the math and the four groups average 1.48 inches(I just COULDN'T round up to 1.5 inch!). I have a $2500 Dakota .270 Win that will do no better.

I imagine I could get better groups with the right sabot petal length. The ones that come with them are too long. I've got some T/C Shockwaves coming I'm going to try as soon as all this snow melts. I've also got a powder scale coming and I'm going to try weighing charges to see if I can get a little tighter groups.
