Shrinking Agent in Bullet Lube?
« on: April 16, 2003, 08:54:01 PM »
:-D Greetings from the Great White North:

Has anyone heard of a shrinking agent being added to bullet lube so that it adhears more tightly to the lube groove and doesn't fall off the bullet?

Kindest regards,
Carpediem

I know that when I make felix lube the Lanolin is what is suppose to make it stay in the grove. You can buy it in any drug store. I belive its called hydrous lanolin or some such thing. Try adding a tablespoon to about 4 sticks of what you are making.

That needs to be ANHYDROUS lanolin. Anhydrous means without water. Don't let some saleslady sell you the hydrous stuff they priobably have in stock and is much more common. I recently bought some from a local drug store. They had to order it and came in the next day. It cost about $18/lb. I would check with a compunding pharmacist before I checked Wal Mart, Walgreen's, etc. They are usually the smaller one owner drug stores and you stand a higher chance of them having it in stock.

I recently made some of the Felix lube for the first time. It came out softer than I wanted but was pretty slick. I am going to go back and add more beeswax and parrafin. Anybody ever try adding some of the alox stick lube to the felix formula?

Felix lube?

:-D Greetings from the Great White North:

Is felix lube the stuff that uses soap flakes that have to be shaved into a pot and melted, then mixed with a whole lot of other stuff?

Has anyone tried using liquid soap in place of the bar soap?

How good is this felix lube?  How fast can you shoot non-gas check bullets before the lube starts to fail?

How does felix lube compare to a mixture of bees wax, parifin wax, and moly?

Kindest regards,
Carpediem

Felix lube is the one you put Ivory soap shavings in. You use it as a substitute for sodium stearate. I would be real skittish about using liquid soap as you don't won't anything with water and my guess is it doesn't have a very high concentration of sodium stearate if any at all. I haven't used any yet but have mixed up a large batch. I am waiting to finish up the stick of hard lube in my sizer now. Also, I have no experience with other blends that contain grease, moly, etc. Sounds like they would be rather messy. I like what I have seen so far with the Felix lube. It is very, very slick to the touch.

:-D Hello Beau:

Thanks for the info on felix lube.

Using a plain base bullet, how fast can you drive the bullet before the lube fails?  Do you need a heater to warm up the felix lube to get it to flow through a lube sizer?

The bees wax, parafin wax and moly combination creates quite a hard stick of lube.  I need to put heat to my lube sizer to get the lube to flow properly.

With my lube, I am driving a 405 grain, 45-70 wheel weight cast bullet at 1700 feet per second.  Anything faster and my barrel starts to lead.

I would like to hear how well felix lube works.

Kindest regards,
Carpediem

So far all I have loaded is pistol rounds with the fastest being about 1300  FPS or so in my SRH .44. Hard lube has done fine so far but I wan't something that doesn't require a heater. I just cast up a bunch of .30 cal RCBS silhouette bullets and just got in a Seaco #17 .45 300 gr mold for the .45/70 Ruger No. 3 and .450 Marlin. I am planning on using the Felix lube on these. Might get a chance to do it this weekend. I have seen people post that they have gotten 2000 FPS out of rifles with no problem using the Felix lube. Guess I just got to try it to believe it. Anybody else got something to add?

2500 fps in a 308 Win. with FWFL. Accurate with low speed wadcutters also. I used Ly Super Moly before this and NRA Alox formula before that. I find Felix Lube superior to both, cheaper and easier to clean up not to mention no unpleasant odor. Gianni.

Carpedium,
Go to www.castpics.net. It is there. There is also a lot of neat info from the guys at the shooters cast bullets forum.

:-D Greetings from the Great White North:

OK dozer, after all these months, I JUST got the preperation H joke :) .

I melted up my first batch of felix lube tonight and am real keen on trying it out.  I think I will test it using my 8mm mauser.  I would love to be able to get 2500 ft/sec. out of it.

Are people using gas checks and felix lube for these great velocities or are they plain base bullets?

Kindest regards,
Carpediem
