44 special carry gun
« on: May 09, 2007, 01:59:09 PM »
Have just picked up a 44 special carry gun and need some loads.  The gun is a Rossi with a 3 inch barrel.  I only want to carry this gun fishing in the heavy brush along the banks of the streams in Eastern Maine.  Just protection from rabid animals.  Thanks for any info.

Buffalo Bore has a 255 SWC at 1,000 rated for game up to 500 lbs.  I think Remington loads a 225 SWC load that may be another good choice. If it was me I would try the Buffalo Bore. Do not even think of trying the +P or heavy magnum type loads in your Rossi.

I just checked the Remington site and the 225 SWC is a 45 Colt. The only 44 Special load I saw was the old 246 grain lead RN. For critter protection check out Buffalo Bore.

millwright:  In addition to Buffalo Bore that was already mentioned, Garret and CorBon may alos make loads for that 44 spl.  You may not need a vary heavy load for personal protection and I'm not sure if the Rossi is built well enough to stand up to the higher pressures of +P ammo, so you may wish to check that out on Rossi's website.  Also, if you reload you can find some nice swc slugs in the 240-250 gn range that would work well at non-+P levels.  HTH.  Mikey.

I really like the CorBon 44 Special loads, but I use them in a Colt Anaconda. I don't know how well a Rossi will handle them for long.

Thank you guys, I knew I could count on this forum.  I will be loading my own and will not be running any real hot loads.  The Rossi is one of the newer ones on more or less the Tarus frame but, it is not a ruger or a smith and I am very aware of that.  I bought the stainless gun, the holster, 20 rounds of factory ammo, and the carry bag for $225, I don't know if that is good or bad, but could not refuse.  Thanks again!

I've shot both the Cor-bon (165gr.) and BB(255)  loads in my 3" Taurus.
Pretty stout. Hunting loads IMHO. Yes, this site rocks! ;)
