Cabelas Digital scale problem
« on: February 08, 2007, 09:40:07 AM »
I bought this scale 7 years ago. Looked just like the RCBS model but was $20.00 cheaper. I bet I haven't used it more than 5 times and a couple hours at the most each setting, so it hasn't been used much. It has always been boxed in the orignal carton with the foam when not in use with the battery removed.
Went to use it recently, installed a new enigizer battery and only had a couple of lines in the read out. Went and bought a new duracell and the same thing is happening.
So the questions are::::>
(1.Is this scale a piece of crap, I got sucked into buying for the savings of a couple dollars?
(2.Would a 12 volt adapter for it work better than a 9volt battery? Should I spend the money for one?
(3. Should I just bite the bullet and go back to my balance bean and say good bye to this digital nightmare.

Thanks

Do you still have any papers with it that might say who the manufacturer is? I would be trying to find out who made it and contact them. I seriously doubt after seven years Cabela's would be interested in your problem ... but I could be wrong.

It could be that the display has gone bad, and a different power source is not going to make a difference. If you've had it seven years, I doubt there's any kind of warranty, though if it was made by RCBS, they may still make good.

E Arthur Brown Co. sells a digital scale for around $30, and I've seen good reviews about it, if you really want another digital scale.

I have a PACT scale, but I also have an RCBS/Ohaus 505 that's 32 years old, never needs batteries, and still works fine!

Yes I still have all the paper work includeing the sales recipt. I am sure that there is no warrenty from cabelas or any one else.
??? Just wondering about putting any money into the power cord adapter would work.
If the display has gone bad then, Yes I did buy a piece of crap.
so rather than get more electronic crap I guess I will go back to my balance beam I can use with out batterys or power cords.

Cabela's can most likely tell you who made it if you don't know and might even be able to talk you thru the needed adjustments. It's really only a matter of pushing the right buttons on it in a proper sequence. It is almost certainly made by PACT. I think pretty much all of them everyone sells are. If Cabela's does not know today who made it I'd call PACT and see if they can help, I'm sure they can.

Some times these vendors can be pretty good about things.

I don't know about the old ones. But the new ones are CRAP! I have one all boxed up ready to go back to Cabela's the next time I go. It reads so inconsistant that I don't dare trust it. I have went back to my beam scale. I bought it to try and save time, but, I found myself messing with it anything to get it to read correctly. It would read .1 -.5 off most of the time. Now on a rifle that might not be a big deal but with a .41 mag and unique power. It spooks mea bit. Especially when the diffrence between starting and max load is .5

Gander, read your post, and had to go check a manual. In the newest Sierra book,(I think it is anyway), with a 170gr. bullet, Unique has a difference of 1 full grain of powder, and a .8 difference, with the 210gr bullet, between the start and max loads. The digital scale I've had, for well over 15 years, has been an RCBS. It might gain a 1/10 of a grain after I've had it on, but I just push the zero button, and it drops back to 0.0. Considering there are 7000grs. to the lb., 1/10 of a grain is hard to measure. With my scale, lightly blowing on it, will make it "bounce" so to speak.  And the only problem I ever had, was the 110 power converter went out. When I called RCBS, the lady didn't even want the old one back. She said they had a few of them go bad, took my name and address, and sent me a new converter. Don't know if they would do that now, as that was 3-4 owners ago. I hate to say it, but this is the difference between then and now. The companys nowdays are more concerened with how cheap they can make something, instead of how good. They figure on a certain percentage of customers being disatisfied, returning an item that was bad, and probably a few, that just say to heck with it, and just throw it away, and buy something else. We keep trying peace, it usually doesn't work!! Remember-(12/7/41)-(9/11/01) gypsyman
