How to polish feed ramp????
« on: March 01, 2007, 10:37:16 AM »
Hello,
I was wondering how to polish the feed ramp?? I keep reading alot about it but not sure exactly how to do it!!
I just bought a 22 year old LLAMA 45 that looks brand new!! I know there not the most popular 45's around but I didn't give much for it!!
It shoots round nose ammo fine but doesn't feed hollow points well. I would also like to know how to disassemble the slide. I'm a revolver fan and don't know much about autos. Any info on gun would be nice, can't seem to find anything on the net except the E2 seems to be the year it was made in 1985. it was imported by Stoeger. Any info would be great!!!

Thanks,

Chad

I ain't no expert but this is how i have polished my feed ramps. First unload the weapon and field strip it. I use a dremmel tool with the cone shaped polishing attachment and red polishing compound. Load the cone with a dap of rouge and pass it in a up and down and side to side motion on the feed ramp reapply compound as needed. after you have the desired results clean the frame thoroughly to remove the polish compound. when cleaning pay attention to the mag well, mag release cut out, slide stop cut out, trigger cut outand lug area. I use a soft brush and pipe cleaners to  get into these areas. let dry apply light lube reassemble and test fire. this does not always solve the hollowpoint feeding problem.

Catpower:  arky told you how to do it but before you start remember that he said it doesn't always solve the hollwopoint feeding problem.  Lots of semis do not feed hollowpoints.  In mil-spec type firearms, feedramps were/are designed to feed round nose or slightly more pointed nose non-deforming fmj bullets.  If your Llama is jamming up on hollowpoints you need to look at where and how she jams.

If she slams the mouth of the hollowpoint against the bottom of the feed ramp and your hp has a semi-circular jam mark across the middle of the mouth of the hollowpoint I doubt ploishing the feedrqmp will solve the problem - the bullet nose needs to be elevated slightly to impact on the face of the feed ramp, not the bottom edge of the feedramp and this is a magazine problem.

If your feedramp is rough and the mouth of the hp flattens against the ramp surface, then polish that sucker up and she should work for you.

There are different types of hps you can load for your pistol, if you reload, but you just may encounter the same problem but with different manufacture bullets.  I think soft points may have the same problem.

If you reload try some 200 gn fmj semi-wadcutters - if they work and feed properly then I would suggest some Mag-Tech 230 gn fmj-swc slugs - they should feed just fine if the 200 gn swcs feed, give you a 230 gn slug and a swc hole to boot.

Disassemble the slide - either works the same as the 1911 Colt or it uses an external extractor and the firing ping may be held in place by a retaining pin.  If you don't have the tools or a schematic to disassemble the slide, go see your gunsmith.  HTH.  Mikey.

Thanks Mikey,

Great info!! I've about decided to just leave it alone. it shoots great with round nose bullets. I just got a habit of wanting to tinker with things when I probably shouldn't. Thanks again!!!

Catpower - hey, tinker away.  That ramp could probably use some polishing.  If you see a brass line or 'drag' type marks going up the feedramp it could use some polishing.  Might not help ya with the hp use but should help smooth the cycling of the action.  And again, if you reload try some fmj-swcs.  I fooled with (and am still foolin' with) swc cast slugs, looking for the 'perfect' flatnosed sharp shouldered slug to shoot from the 45 acp and believe I found it with the mag-Tech 230 gn fmj-swc.  I don't know who finally thought of going to a swc in that weight but it seems almost danged perfect.  Cuts a beautiful 'square' hole in the target, which I like to see and functions without problem in my Springer GI and Colt Commander.  HTH.  Mikey.
