I WANT A 25-35 in a Handi !!!!
« on: July 06, 2007, 02:24:32 PM »
I have long wanted this caliber in a handi. Reading about all Tim's custom caliber handis makes me really want this... I think I am ready for the leap. My first custom chambered Handi!!

Now, I do have a couple wild cats in bolt guns. I have a strong affinity for the 98 Mauser. To date I have a 6.5-06, and 280 Rem and 30-06 and a 35 Whelen all chambered in Argentine Mauser's 1898. I also have a complete Arg. Mauser still in mostly factory attire chambered in the orig 7.65 Mauser.

I have a bunch of new brass and old bullets as well as dies so all I need is a barrel to shoot the stuff in. Long ago I bought a very nice 1893 Marlin chambered 25-35. got it for a good price too. Didn't shoot it right away, sat in the safe for about 6 months. When I got it to the range, i got a rude awakening....shells went in 2535 and came out 32 Win spl!!!  Someone had re-chambered before I got it. I sold it but kept the reloading stuff as I have been looking since. I haven't found one worth the price people are asking for them.

Tim, do you have any info you could pass along? Barrel to start with, your gunsmith...etc.

Any one have one already who would like to comment. Any one with a comment?

 thanks,
 CW

It is a fairly low pressure round, I would say it is would be a barrel stubbing option, a takeoff Remington .25 cal barrel should be easy to find, and 12 gauge donor barrels are about $35.00.  Larry

You mean like "sleeving" the 12 ga barrel?

 If so, tell me more...

What Larry is talking about is to take a 12 ga barrel and cut the chamber & under lug off the barrel , then have the chamber / lug tapped to have the 25 barrel threaded into it .

Then you have the 25 cal barrel chambered to 25/35  . or you could have a 22 Mag bull barrel or 22 Hornet barrel bored to 25 cal. then have a 25/35 chamber cut into it .

A friend built a "poormans" 45-70 double rifle like this with a SXS SKB shotgun some time back!! I didnt think it could be used here, but why not I guess.

Is it more cost effective than just rechambering a complete barrel? How do you deal with the extractor?

Marv has a 25-35 made from a 223 Superlight barrel IIRC, Wayne York did it for him, same smith I use, will cost about $300+ for the rebore/rechamber, his 6 groove cut rifling is the best!! ;)

I've done two to 30 carbine, this method is my favorite, but there are other ways of going about it, first one I did I threaded at the breach, it works good, but this was a lot easier to get a good fit on plus you get a little thicker barrel at the breach.  http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,118095.0.html  Larry

This is the first method I tried, works well, but it is more work I think.  Larry

Buy a 25-06 barrel and use it for the barrel and the stub.... 25-35, 25-20, or 250 Savage all would be very nice in a handi.
