I  just bought a marlin bolt action 7 shot clip 22mag and was wondering what ammo u guys gun likes i got some cci maxi mag 40gr hp, some rem vmax 33gr,but all the stores are out of the 45grwin was just wondering what ammo your rifle groups well with havent got to shoot mine yet at a 100 just at about 40 yards so i cant tell much untell the weather gets better and the wind goes down thanks for the info John

I've found that to be true with my Mod 25M.  Winchester Supremes, CCI Maxi Mags, Winchester Super X all shoot well at 100 yards.  Winchester Dynapoints shoot best, however.

I shot it yesterday shot well  shot the cci 40gr and the rem 33gr about 1/4 to 1/2  at 100 is this to be expected or can they get tighter with more the barrel gets shot in and diffrant ammo

Gee, I would really like to see a picture of those 1/4" MOA groups you shot at 100 yards from your new Marlin Bolt action .22 Mag. Which ammo shot the smallest groups? How many shots in these groups, 3, 5, 10? You don't mention a scope so I guess you are using iron sights. I really don't know if your groups will get smaller than 1/4" at 100 yards from a new gun but if you are using iron sights and get a good scope on your rifle you may be able to shrink them to 1/8" or even 1/16" on a good day. And as mag-check said, most ammo should shoot good enough for hunting (1/4" MOA) even if the gun does not turn into a real tack driver...<><.... :)

Be happy with that.  It is amazing for a stock 22 mag.  If it gets better we may not want to hear about it <vbg>.

This is 3 shot groups and i have a cheap tasco 3-9-40 on it and it is stock other than the triger job i dont on it the ammo was the same so i can shot eather ammo in my gun untel i get some winchester 45 grainers to try

Thats great shooting from a new gun backstrap, how about some pictures of those 100 yard 1/4" groups. I really like my H&R Sportsters and can regularly get MOA or slightly better groups with the .22 Mag, .17 HMR and .17 Mach2, not so with the .22 LR but I have iron sights on that one. However if you are getting 1/4" groups with a new .22 Mag Marlin bolt gun I am going to start looking for one!!! Of course the crows and coyote don't seem to know the difference of being hit with a MOA or 1/4 MOA gun at 100 yards but it would really begin to show up at 200-250 yards and more....<><.... :)

Myself i wouldnt shoot anthing father than 130yd  with my mag i am not sure it would have the knock down  for thats just my opinion i have a H&R223 for that work

Ok enough on this subject i just asked a simple question and every body is acting like they dont beleive  some one ALL THAT matters that i know the gun shoots well  and thats that

Hey backstrap, please take no offense, a 1/4" group from a new rimfire rifle is exceptional, also I will admit at first I was a bit incredulous but I think we all will agree that 1/4" groups at 100 yards from a new rifle is outstanding. I am seriuos that if that is the norm I am seriously considering looking into buying one. As you said you may have just gotten a good gun and thats great. I would be interested in some responses from others that own Marlin bolt rimfire guns in .22 Mag or .17HMR to see what their guns do. If they are similar I will definitely order one. I have also heard that Savage rimfire bolt guns are also very accurate. A 1/4" 3 shot group with .22 caliber bullets works out to being one ragged hole, and thats great in anyone's book....<><.... :)

I have a Savage 17HMR that is quite accurate once it got a trigger job.  Sounds like Backstrap had to do one to his Marlin as well.  I put an aftermarket (Riflebasix) trigger in mine, and once I got it adjusted right groups shrunk amazingly.  I rarely use that gun anymore since getting a 17HMR barrel for my Contender that is just plain boring it shoots so well.  I most likely will give the Savage to my son.  I think both Savage and Marlin use the same basic gun for 22Mag and 17HMR.

In the old days the main limiter for 22Mag was the copper washed bullets.  They were often carried loose in someone's pocket, bounced together a few times, and were often deformed when shot.  Hard to get a good group then.  Now you can get some real quality bullets on a mag, and the groups show it.

you may be onto something there Keith L, some of the new jacketed .22 Mag ammo is outstanding. My .22 Mag does best with the Winchester Supreme ammo, both the black and silver box, and the accuracy is outstanding for rimfire coyote loads....<><.... :)

Shot a new Marlin 982vs  yesterday and the first group at 50 yards was .495 CtoC. This is a gun for night Predator hunting and I'm happy with that. 4X BSA illuminated retical. Have not owned a 22 mag since the early '70s, and they do seem to have gotten more accurate, but that may be due to the large selection of bullet types.  Yesterday I was shooting Federal Premium TNT's 30 grain that were not around in the 70s.
