Savage 99: Is It worth $450?
« on: February 04, 2007, 10:06:28 AM »
I found a 99 in a local gun shop. I think it is an EG model, serial number 660,000 range. It is in about 75-80% shape, some wear on the blueing, especially on the belly. The stock has several scrapes,  It has been drilled and tapped, in the correct location. Is it worth $450? If it isn't, what would it be worth?
In case my ID is not correct, the rifle has a 22 or 24 inch barrel, steel buttplate, schnabel forend, brass counter and magazine, and lever safety.

According to my records, that rifle's serial number indicates it was made in late 1952... and is worth the asking price of $450 in it's current condition.

I have seen Model 99s nade in that era in 95% or better condition selling for $700-$800 because those rifles were made during the era in which Savage was turning out some of the  finest quality American-made rifles ever produced.

Model 99s made from the mid-1930s through 1960 were among the best Model 99s ever made... and your rifle, made in 1952, is of the highest quality and finest workmanship.   Of course, if you could buy it for less, so much the better.  But don't hesitate too long... they ain't makin' 'em any more.  From your description, I'd guess it's my favorite model... an "EG".

The Model 99s quality dropped considerably in 1960 when Savage moved it's manufacturing from Chicopee Falls, Mass. to Westfield, Mass. where they remain today.

Your rifle is also known as a "pre-mil" Model 99 meaning it's serial number is less than 1 milliion... a serial number reached in about 1960.

A little outside wear on a Model 99 just adds "character", but doesn't hurt the rifle's ability to perform.   ;)

Location is everythung.  I live in NJ and that rifle as you described would probably go for $600.00 or more.  I have one in .300 Savage EG with the Savage tang sight on it.  It was made in 1946 and shoots exceptionally well.  The wear on the reciever metal is probably from carrying in the field, adds nice character(if guns could talk!)  If you are lucky some of the case color may be on the lever.
Good luck with it and enjoy it.
