Most accurate sabot slug?
« on: August 12, 2005, 08:54:29 AM »
What shotgun are you shooting?

What 12 gauge sabot slug have you found most accurate at 100 yards?

I just picked up a 12 gauge Remington 870 synthetic with the super slug 23" rifled barrel.  I tried 2 3/4 Rem Copper Solids and  2 3/4 Federal Barnes Expanders off the bench at 100 yards.  Both are printing 3"  five shot groups at 100 yards.

I have some Winchester BRI's and Federal Hydrashok HP's on hand but have not tried them yet.  I'd like to try the Hornady SST's but they don't seem to be available yet.  The SST bullet in my Omega Muzzleloader is wonderfully accurate.

Thanks.

1100 Rem. Hastings barrel- BRI slugs very hard to beat. You can probably substitute the 870 for the 1100.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

I bought five different boxes of sabots last year, and although all shot well, the remington coper solids shot the best. Lightfields were a close second. These were from a Mossberg 500 w/cantilever rifled barrel. I was shooting off a rolled up jacket and getting 3" at 100.

Wow! I posted this over a year ago.

I bought an NEF Ultra Slug Hunter that's doing groups half the size of the Remington 870 with Remington 12 gauge 2 3/4 Copper Solids.

It's hard to beat the USG. In price or accuracy..I found the SST's and the winchester platnum's to shoot the best, but and there's always a but... the SST's are about $6 cheaper- Kevin

I use the Hastings laser accurate 3" from www.grafs.com. They are right on the money at 100yds.

I just tried the Hornady SST sabots in my new 870 slug gun and I'm lucky to get 3" groups at 50 yards.  I'm very disappointed so far.  I can do better than that with open sights on my smoothbore 870.  I'm probably going to try some of the Remington copper solids.

I ended up buying some of the Remington Copper Solid slugs and they shoot beautifully through my barrel.  I was getting one ragged hole at 70 yards so I'll be sticking with them from now on.  Now I just have to find someone interested in buying my Hornady SST slugs. :(

Just shot some SST's an hour ago and am VERY Impressed. I have a Hastings barrel on my 870 and factory open sights ( which I have been meaning to change for the last 10 years).  The sights cover any small target almost completely, so to a true grouping is impossible. So they grouped reasonably well at 50yds which is no big deal, what impressed me was there down range accuracy.  At 150, easily in a paper plate.  And they are only supposed to drop 7" at 200.  That is what I like!

For years I used Winchester Supreme 2 3/4" sabots in Rem. 870 replacement rifled barrel.  Last year I found a cheaper sabot just as accurate & same POI. as Winchester.  It is the Brenneke KO sabot.

Every guns shoots slugs differently. I had a Remington 1100 that loved Remington copper solids, my Xtrema II slug gun shoot's the Lightfields the best. You just have to see what shoots best in your set up.

Every guns shoots slugs differently.

Like Red Hawk says above.  You will have to pony up the dough and buy a bunch of different slugs and go to the range.  I would suggest you get ready for some recoil by wearing a past pad or some other means to help with the recoil.  Shooting rested shotgun slug rounds can really get to hurting after a while.  ;)

You will have to find what your guns likes.  We can tell you stories all day, but it will do you no good.  Have fun!!!
