new or used $$
« on: February 07, 2007, 11:03:05 AM »
I just want a basic handirifle with wood stocks I can sand to fit the gun. What should something like that cost? I was talking to the gander mountain people last night and they want 220 or so for a new gun, and said the used ones go for about 190. Can  I get a substantially better deal at a pawn shop? (I'm looking for a .223 or a 30-30, and I will be getting more barrels in the future I'm sure.)

It really depends on where you are I think.  In my area, new basic handis can be bought for as low as $185.  Used guns for $150.  I know others find them much higher in their areas.

I've bought several used Handis for $125-$175, they aren't exactly a dime a dozen, but good buys can be found from individuals if you look enough and are quick!! ;D I have yet to find a good buy on a used one in a shop of any kind around here, cept maybe Markus' shop at the Mercantile. ;)

I haven't seen one in a shop used for a decent price and they are few and far between too.  The pawn shop might be a place to check, although its hit or miss if they happen to have one. If a Cabelas is nearby they will be a little cheaper than Gander Mtn. plus you can open a charge and get $$ off the purchase.  I am looking at a auctioneer who regularly has firearms only auctions, and judging from past auctions the single shot rifles by NEF are not too bad of a deal.

Just some ideas for ya.

^  Very true.

I have seen used handis at several Cabela's stores in the $140-160 range.  A few weeks ago I regretfully passed up a 12ga Ultra Slug Hunter with the 3 color laminate stock and a scope for $160 at a Cabela's in Minnesota.  I asked one of the gun salesman if there was something wrong with it for that price, and he told me that those stoopid single shot rifles are dime a dozen.  Hopefully Cabela's used gun department doesn't look at the handi barrel prices on ebay.   ;)

Yes, I realize it will cloverleaf at 100 yards.
I think that some of the larger retailers look down on cheap guns when they can sell so many other guns for $600 used.

Well I have decided that it was time for handi #2 today so I go looking.I want to get the 45-70. Went to the only two places in my area that sells handis. Well they did not have any but one said he was getting one next week the other said he would be getting a couple in next week. Great I thought until I asked the price was going to be these are the wood stocked and 22 inch barrels 350.00 dollars. I think that is kinda on the high side being that Wal-Mart has them for a little over two but sports south has any in stock.
