Marlin 45-70 1895SS
« on: April 02, 2007, 05:47:38 AM »
Just purchased an 1895SS.  I would like to know what y'all's shoot most accurately.  400 gr lead, 350 gr jacketed or other?

I have molds for my Trapdoor remake in 400 gr and these will be the first ones down the barrel.  Are Trapdoor velocities accurate in these barrels?  Or do they need to be faster?

Have the SAECO and Lyman 405 gr plain base bullet molds.  Any preference?  Lyman is measuring at .460" and SAECO is showing .456" out of WW+Lino.  Thinking the Lyman is going to get the nod.

What is normal groove diameter?  I don't have any slugs soft enough to try slugging the bore.

Buddy shoots the 300 gr Hornady's but very close to 2000 fps and I have no need to go that fast.

All information is appreciated.

Just about anything you care to throw.

Should work just fine.  Even subsonic reduced loads with pistol powders can be accurate.

The larger diameter bullet is going to work best with that Microgroove barrel.  This is an older 1895 designated the SS, not stainless steel (1895GS), correct?

Most Microgroove 1895s are right around .458", so you want to size .459" or .460".

Have fun with your Lymans anywhere from 900 to 1600 fps.

This is an older 1895SS made in 1997, not a Stainless Steel version.  Pretty wood in decent shape.

Microgrooves are usually slugged at .458" - that's what I needed to know.  Now's my chance to paper patch.  Think I'll pass for now.

900 to 1600 fps - sounds like a good target range.  From my search, it sounds like it will perform with a wide variety of powders.  3031 and SR4759 are on my bench so that is what I will start with.  I am shooting 1200 fps estimated with the Trapdoor loads.  Pleasant can chasers.

Thanks!  Zcarp2

My standard load for my 1970's or 1980's Micro Groove is 13.5 - 13.6 grains of Unique fro about 1150 fps in 405 grain .  I use the same powder charge fro 300 - 405 grain .

The rifle seems to like larger bullets .  .457 - .458" have been paper patched with cigarett paper .  I am now experimenting with 405 grain Lee Hollow Base bullets at .460" or larger .
