handi stocks
« on: February 04, 2007, 10:23:36 AM »
Has anyone ever tried to strip the finish off of the "pallet wood" stock as you call them and sand them down and refinish them? I enjoy woodworking and have been considering giving that a try soon when I order my 500 S&W since it doesn't come with the Ultra option? Charlie

I just did mine this weekend. Look at the "Holic's Hobbies" post for before and after pictures. It wasn't very hard to do. The pictures do not do it much justice as I do some woodworking as one of my hobbies and I was very pleased with this little project. The wood was surprisingly better than I had hoped for after stripping the old finish away.

Good luck ....

I sanded down a set of pallet wood stocks on my .410 and refinished them. The stocks had real nice grain under that brown job from the factory. I re-did mine in a mahogany stain and they came out real nice.

Thanks Jeepman. Do you know what kind of wood they are made of? I think I would like to try burning the grain with my torch and then just coating it with clear gloss. I did that with a blank plaque that I bought from the hobby store and it made a real neat antler mount.

What did everyone use to strip them?

I bought a can of stripper from Home Depot for about $6.00. It didn't really work that well so I sanded most of mine off being careful of the edges/lines that meet up with the receiver. I am not sure what kind of wood it was ... it had me guessing. I would like to have a few more stocks/forearms to experiment with. One thing I want to try is to mix some of my Minwax Puritan Pine color with a touch of some "China Red" finish I used for one of my wife's cabinets. I think a hint of red in one of these would look awesome.

I may try a different (non standard gun stock color) stain if I don't try to burn the wood grain instead. I will post some pictures.

shaner .... That wood looks really good ... what's the name of that citrus floor stripper you used if you don't mind? What I bought from Home Depot didn't work well at all so I hand sanded most of mine. This isn't a hard project and the not-so-good finish from the factory can be replaced without too much time or money.

I used that color on a 10/22 one time. Where did you get the white spacer? I am looking to do something similar soon.

if yur talkin about the recoil pad spacer ,, well i really hate to give out ool- family secerets buuuuuuuuuuut, since we are all family here i guess it cant hurt,if yu wanttto make cheap whiteline spacers here yu go, round up old antifreeze ,oil jugs anything thats made of the white heavy plastic jugs, lot og the big weed killer jugs farmers use , 2 1/2 oil jugs yu know what i mean they are made of a thick, heavy white plastic thats real easy to cut and shape with sharp  scissors  or excacto knives, and some finr  sandpaper to really whiten them up when u get it fitted,.just lay yur recoil pad on top of the plastic trace it out , cut it out  little sandin an its fitted  they look great , and the price is right, hell go to brownells and they want 5bucks an up for spacers ,, the sling spacers are marble sapces i bought a whole bag of 100 way make, my fat fingers dont lens to cuttin things that small  hahahha

As Shaner said, Brownells has the white spacers.  They are easily sanded to fit your application.  If you want to pay for them, of course.

I like the antifreeze just idea. that really appeals to my sense of miser cheapskate stingy frugality. clever too. If I had the money to blow on spacers I'd be that the browning low wall forum, not the handi forum.  ;)

A few weeks ago I decided to replace the stocks on my pardner shotgun, and replace them with the straight grip laminate stocks.  I had the pallet wood ones to mess with, and here is the result.  I thought it turned out pretty good.  I have a few other pictures, but they were really glossy, and it didn't show up good on the picture.  I ended up putting like 7-8 coats of tru-oil on it.
