9.3x74R Double Rifle
« on: February 23, 2007, 11:39:18 AM »
You all know my fondness for Valmet 412's, also that i was doing quite a bit of "wildcatting" in the distant past.  One of the last projects i was working on was to make up some new cartridges based on the 9.3x74R case.

I always thought the case needed a bit of "updateing" so one of the first things i worked on was to just imp. the existing case.  I did this, and chambered my double rifle for the imp. chamber.  Below you can see my double, a standard load, and a couple fire formed cases from the new chamber.

Don't rag on me for NOT cleaning up the cases, i was busy today and didn't get to it.... hahahahahahaa

Anyway, You can still fire factory 9.3x74R loads in the gun, and of course you can then take the fire formed brass and reload it to a higher velocity.  How much higher???  I don't know, because believe it or not, this is the first rounds i've fired in these bbls in over 10 years since i last worked on this project!!

As this is as far as i've got so far, i need to get around to seeing what kind of speed improvements this new imptoved chamber will give..  Stay tuned...

Interesting.  I look forward to seeing what you come up with as far as improvements.

What would you use this gun for?  Rabbit might be a tad small.   ;D

9.3X74 will do anything that needs doing so I'll be interested to see how you improve on it.

  Squirrels!!!

And if you had squirrels like WE do, you'd be emailing me day and night "begging" me for one of my new creations!!!

As you can see in the pict., the new chamber allows you to fire std. ammo and get an imp. case back out.

All the new design is going to do, is give more case capacity, and i'm sure it will get 100 fps more, probably 200 fps more, all with the same low pressures the 9.3x74R is known for...  That doesn't sound like much, but it's quite a bit with 286 grain bullets!

The big bullet is going to shoot flatter, and kick a little extra butt down range!!,  It will also help the big bullets expand more reliably at longer ranges on "thin skinned" game....  Keep in mind, when i designed it i had guys beating my door down looking to buy a double for Brown Bear hunting...

In the end, this gun will have 286 NP's (as shown in the below pict.) loaded and regulated in it,   and it will be ready for anything from brown bear to small deer...  OR maybe Doug will need some help cleaning out some of those porkers he has.  I've never harvested a wild pig before, and it's my favorite meat...   8)

Very interesting (the squirel that is  :o)

The pig hunt is set for next Friday.  I will be using the 12 ga/30-06 with deep penetrating rounds.  If I had a 9.3x74R I would use it in that it appears to be a very good pig round.
