LH .22
« on: February 09, 2007, 09:11:55 AM »
I have an older Savage Mark II. The thing has an been an endless source of aggrivation.  If I clean it well like I would any other rifle the groups go to hell. I mean really bad. 6" group at 50 yards. After about 200 rounds they tighten up to two inches. Ammo dosn't seem to make a difference. This has been going on since it was new. There have been times I wanted to wrap it around a tree. I have had it. I am going to write Savage and see if they are willing do anything for me. If not it isn't a big deal. It was the first rifle I ever had and all in all it really has served me well. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if they said I was SOL.

So on to my question. What companys make a left handed bolt action .22. I would love to have a Stainless one with a synthetic stock but am unaware of one that is made. Is anyone aware on such a critter.

I've got a Savage 93GL in 22 Mag and get 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 meters.  I'd contact Savage.

I have one of the Mark IIs in left hand also.  My rifle will shoot into about 1/2" at 50 yards with Winchester Power Point ammo.  It has been my experience with 22s that you are better off leaving them alone as far as cleaning (bore and chamber) goes unless you  start having functioning problems.  Of course if you get caught out in the rain or dunk the rifle in a creek or whatever you need to dry the bore.  I can't think of a single 22 that I have ever dealt with the shot better with a clean bore than a fouled bore.  But with that said I think your rifle should do better than what it is.  As far as other rifles goes, my next left hand 22 will be a CZ 452.  I have a right handed one now and it is incredibly accurate less than 1/4" at 50 yards.

Bubber -- I have a Mk II LH, and it has never been as accurate as I would like. I tried shimming the receiver up with very thin plastic sheeting, to float the barrel -- no change. It shoots about 1.5 to 2" groups at 50 yards from a rest with a scope, no matter which ammo I use. I did the "shim trick" on the trigger and installed an overtravel screw, and the trigger is great now -- breaks at about 2.5 pounds, but that didn't improve the overall accuracy, either.

After all that, I decided to use it for iron-sight shooting, so I lopped off the Monte Carlo comb and fitted a Williams Guide receiver sight and a Shorty ramp and bead, and it gets a lot of use to practice the basics of rifle shooting, sometimes using a sling. I know what it will do with a scope, and I try my best to achieve that with iron sights. I don't often make it, but practicing with an old-fashioned aperture sight does improves my rifle shooting overall.

The mark 2 I have has had the trigger worked on, the recever has been glass bedded and barrel free floated, I lapped the barrel and a few other things. Nothing helped or hamed the accuracy.

I laid my hands on a CZ 452 the other day at a local gun shop. I was impressed. There is a good chance it will be coming home with me soon.

I have one of the CZ 452 that I am very happy with. Shoots well enough with iron sights that I've put off any thought of scoping it. Besides, sneaking up on the gophers is half the fun of gopher hunting.

Does any one make a heavy barrel 22lr? I know that savage makes one in right, but have yet to find one in left.
