handmade forearm?

In what order did you work after you found a good forearm shape?  Bore out barrel channel-Attach forearm spacer-Drill forearm screw hole?  How did you make sure it stayed snug?  Very clever idea.  i wanna try 2.  My 30-06 shoots great on 5/16" steel and rubber washer.  I'd like to have a neat shape though.  Good job dude.

Here's one I'm working on.You guys have got me in the"holics".Used basic hand tools to do it.Drill press with rotary files for the channel and other cuts.The finger grooves used a rotary rasp.Still have final sanding to do and warmer weather to shoot.-5 wind chill today and spitting snow.This 17 m2 will shoot 1/4-3/8" groups at 100 yds so I may need to sand on the channel some more before staining it.Hope it stains to look close to the stock that's coming in the mail.The wood here is Maple.Also it only weighs in at 13 oz.Dave




Here's the completed fore arm.Added a walnut end piece to get the end out to where I wanted it.Also a picture of the grouping after I put it on.Didn't effect accuracy at all.Still only wieghs 14oz.

A butternut tree on my place died last year (I think it's butternut). I wonder what that wood could be used for . . .it's kinda light in color, but it's a big tree. I don't have a chainsaw (what the heck kind of outdoor guy am I, anyway? Well, I spend all my spare money on guns . . .)

Any of you guys live in western  Wisconsin? You'd be welcome to some of the wood for worthy projects like Handi stocks and forends.

gosh i sure do love the creativity you guys have to make these great rifles something more, its really a turnkey for me to see that, keep it up guys lookin good parts man i love the style you chose.

I routered the barrel channel first then drilled the lug hole.
That took me two tries though.
Then I sanded the channel to get a nice even barrel fit.
Next I trimmed and sanded the forarm to the shape I wanted and to match reciver.
Turned out OK but I can't wait to do another.
I really wanted it longer than this one turned out.

Was also thinking I could make a really short one and not groove around barrel lug.
Then It would be pillar bedded and you would have to hold it in the same spot
becouse that would be the only spot.

Dave, I like that forearm looks nice.
Your are a brave man messing with a 1/4" rifle.

Yes,but if it doesn't shoot as good,I'll go back to the stock fore arm.Nothing ventured,nothing gained.Besides it to dang cold outside to do anything.6 degrees here this morning and -11 wind chill.Shops setting at 65.Thanks for the cudos.Dave

It's the trimming and matching to the reciever that i'm interested in.  You have a forearm spacer right?

No sir on the spacer.A little measuring and some careful use of the rotary file and just cut it out.Not perfect,but it works.I think I took a picture of it.If not I can and will post it.Dave

My trimming was to match the forearm spacer shape.
I made it the same width and shape as the reciever. Looks good.
Fitting was very little sanding to fit barrel contour. Especialy rite by the spacer.
Of course mine is heavy barrel so not much contour.

No oring. i am hoping to bed the whole barrel.

Back in '99 an acquaintence in Md. had a cherry tree fall over that had been dead for a few yrs.

He sawed it off and got the log on a car trailer and hauled it to a mill. Had a bunch of blanks sawed out and painted the ends with a wax goop to seal so they wouldn't crack.  That was some before he came out her to CO in '99 and donated three of the blanks to me.

I ruined one trying to get the shape started and gave it away.

But, had one turned by a stock maker and got a lovely classic stock for my Sako varmint gun.
Over the yrs it's turned quite dark red ,but, it's still a nice looking stock.

So don't be afraid to give a dead tree a try.
