Got my new toy today!
« on: February 13, 2007, 08:10:39 AM »
My 45-70 BC came in today and it is beautifullllll!   Being concerned about throat depth I chamber a 405gr cartridge with a OAL of 2.550 and it fit fine.  The 405gr is loaded for around MV 1585fps and 2259ME, that worked fine so I went and got me a 350gr PMC +P out of storage and it fit fine.  The 350 is MV 2025 and 3167 ME.  That is probably as heavy as I am going to ever shoot out of it.

I guess I don't understand the throating issue Max COAL is 2.550 for the round and my fits fine.  Is there something I am missing?

If it ever warms up I will go out to range and see if it works.

Congrats on your new toy :)  I picked one up a few months ago.  I have the 38-55 on layaway.  I bought a box of federal 405 cast bullets and it shot great.  I plan on mostly shooting cast bullets out of both of them.  I have bullets in 405 and 350.  When the weather gets better I plan on on shooting it more.  Where did you hear about a throating issue?

Congrats!! ;) If you look at the factory Rem 405gr load, you'll notice they're crimped on the ogive, not in the cannelure, they also have a COL of 2.532", the discontinued PMC ammo is 2.535" and will shoot fine in any Handi/BC. You may also have one that's an exception to the rule, but there are countless threads here on short throated .45-70s, both BC and Handi, I have 4 of em, they were all short throated, the 45-120 is the only one I didn't throat for obvious reasons, it got a super long throat after the rechamber!! ;D

One of the benefits of throating is you can load much longer with the heavier bullets which will reduce pressure, a good example of this can be seen in Hodgdon's 45-120 data for the 500gr cast and H4895, 60gr at 1809fps, a similar load in a .45-70 cartridge would put pressure near 40kcup at a COL of 2.85", the 45-120 pressure is 28.5kcup. So if you're interested in loading big bullets, there's a big advantage to having a bit longer throat in a 45-70, but not so much if you shoot the lighter 300gr bullets.  ;)

I haven't measured my 405 Rem loads, but I get the best accuracy with them seated to the forward cannelure and a light roll crimp (Lee Factory Crimp).  Never have had any problem with them in the Handi.

quickdtoo,

The 405gr Remingtons I have are my handloads.  At 1600fps 2200ME which out to be a sweet load for the BC.
