Muzzleloading shotguns?
« on: January 21, 2007, 12:43:31 PM »
Anyone planning on using a black powder shotgun for turkey season this year? I have worked up an awesome load for my Knight TK2000. I started using plastic buffer in my shot charge, just like the buffered turkey loads offered by all the major manufacturers, and it added 10 yards to my effective pattern. I now have a killing pattern out to 40 yards. I'm getting 10 to 15 nickel plated #4's in the head/neck on my target at that distance.

It's way cool, many people shot BP rifles and some pistol... rarely does anyone shoot BP shotgun.

Twice, I scored, 2 years in a row with a TC New Englander(an early one w/NO CHOKE).
I cut the metal rim off a shotshell hull and used the plastic sleeve as a speedloader. 72grs of Goex BP makes for a total white-out.

Good luck,

I've been debating the TK2000 for a while.  The BP bug has bit me bad.  I bought three new BP guns last year alone.  I think it would be too cool to take a turkey with blackpowder.  My one problem is that where I hunt, coyotes usually answer the calls as well as turkey's do.  When you got 3 or 4 dogs coming at you from 30 yds out, then that extra couple of shells in the mag helps out a bit.   :)

We don't have that big of a problem with coyotes here...yet. I have seen some though. The TK200 is one of my favorite guns. It's not just for turkeys. There are modified and improved choke tubes available. I use mine for doves, crows and rabbits as well as turkey. It's fun to shoot and easy to clean. Can you keep a handgun with you to take care of the coyote problem.

Can I carry a handgun?  Sure.....I do even though regs say not to.  I'd rather explain why I have a handgun during turkey season to an officer than explain to my wife why I got nailed by a crazy dog and have to get rabies shots.   ;)

Black powder shotguns is all I've used for the last few yrs. Flintlocks for the last two yrs. I built the one I've been using and have parts on the way (got everything but barrel and wood and it's late) for another .62cal. smoothbore (20ga.) I'm trying to get it ready enough to hunt with this season, but don't look like I'm going to make it.  Will have a turkey barrel that shoots killer pattern out to 45yds. I really only care about a good pattern out to 35yds..and if it'll do that I'll be happy.
The flintlock I hunt with now is a 25 to 30yd gun...cylinder bore..no choke.
I got the limit with it last yr. on public land in Fl.. one was a good long spurred gobbler.
People don't know what they're missing not giving muzzleloader shotguns a try for turkeys.
