Hey! I'm a new member in this forum, from Sweden! I've just bought my first handi (.45-70) with the wood stock... And i've understood that the trigger is a common problem? Is there any other way to improve the accuracy on this rifle?

Welcome aboard, Stefan!!

Take a look at the FAQs and Help sticky, there are 2 links in there on trigger work that help with making as light a trigger as one could want with not too much work, lots of other stuff in there too!

Now you see why he is Quickdtoo , key word Quick . I have found that cast bullets will shoot very well in the 45/70s and if you hand load your ammo this will help if shoot even better .

I don't know what you have for factory ammo in your area , the Remington 350 grain HPs do a wonderful job in my rifle as far as groups go .

Howdy, there's; federal with speers hot-cor 350gr bullet, winchesters JHP bullet 300gr? remingtons 350gr HP bullet and their 405gr SP. This is it, as far as i know anyway... But i think there's more...

Does the frontal area of your chamber hava a "forcing cone" or a "throat"? Either way, by proper throating you an improve on the accuracy of your barrel by having a new throat section cut and possibly lengthened a little bit, depending on what bullet weights you will be shooting. Good luck with your new barrel....

If you can get some of the 300 grain Nosler Partitions and some H4198..give them a try...They work great in all of my 45-70's..and are exceedingly accurate and consistent...Also looking at getting a Lyman "M" die...and a Lee Factory Crimp die...They will help a-lot in your reloading..

Please elaborate on the Rem 350gr, as far as I know, they don't offer a 350gr bullet in any form, ammo or component, just the 300gr and 405gr.

Perhaps you both meant the Rem 300gr HP or are trying to confuse me.

As for throat length, you won't have any trouble with the mentioned factory ammo, it all shoots well in the Handi, but if you get into handloading, most bullets 350gr and bigger, you'll either have to load short of recommended COL or have the chamber throated, H&R NEF 45-70s have notoriously short throats, I throated all 3 of mine so I could load to recommend COL and longer!! All 3 of em were extremely accurate before the throating and still are. You can read about the throating in the FAQs if interested.

As Mac mentioned, the H4198 and 300gr Nosler PP are an excellent combo, it shoots sub moa in my scoped Handi and just as well in my scoped BC at well over 2400fps in both.

If you bought a new 45/70 the trigger pull is probably fine. Mine was perfect and very accurate with 300 gr hp hand loads right out of the box. Only thing I added was a a scope and some lead in the rifle butt.

I am guessing you have not fired it yet, before you start too much tinkering make sure to get a good base line reading of stock, lots of guys (myself included) get their first handi read all the accuracy tips and apply them all getting truly frustrated.

Do you plan on using it on one of those swedish moose? the 45/70 loaded right should do just fine in that application.

if you're reffering to my question about the trigger, it was more of a general kind ( just to check what the generall weeknesses could be) anyway i think it's a bit stupid to start planning for all these things without knowing what the rifle actually can do out of the box... I've fired about 30 rounds with it ,all with federals factory ammo with the speer bullet.. At it's best i got three shot series of 2" in bench, it would be just fine for the swedish moose brownbear and hogs, but i've planned to use it for deerhunting(less destruction than smaller/faster calibers)on distanses up to 350ft. and because of that i would like to have as great precision in it as possible... And I also've got a Ruger no.1 since a few years back, so i'm not completely novice(old enough to leave tricky jobs to the gunsmith) in this area.. But i totally understand what you're saying

After a second look around i've also found that we have the WIN 300 gr. Supreme® Partition Gold® .... But that's not Noslers bullet, or is it?

That is the Nosler bullet. Winchester loads it also I thing every one forgot. The suprems are priciy so its a lot cheeper to reload the partitions.

Don't know if this will help, but if you can get some good metal polish like flitz, I would also polish the bore!

About 4 patches of polish up and down the barrel about 10 to 20 times per patch, and then take a patch or two of bore cleaner to get rid of excess polish. I watched my groups go get real tight after doing this . The main thing is to start out make sure the bore is squeaky clean.

Yeah, exept that in Sweden the prices on US made factory ammo is pretty much the same, exept for federal. (20rounds cost approx. 37 us dollars) Remington and Win. costs around 80 Dollars... The best for all Swedish .45/70 shooters would be if Norma started to load their Oryx bullet in the caliber, but that's highly unlightly... Over here it's mainly 9,3*57/62/74R 308w, 30-06 spring. and of course our national caliber 6,5*55 Swedish mauser that sells in the numbers that's required

But it's good to know that I can purcase foctory loaded nosler bullets in .45/70 They're a bit better than the rest!
