E Nickle? Identifing finish
« on: February 04, 2007, 04:30:52 AM »
I am cleaning up a nice Colt Commander for a friend.  He bought it in a pawn shop.  On one of the side slabs, it had some words engraved and the pawn shop ground them off.  I have most of the grinder marks out, but I think it probably has electroless nickle on it.  It shows a pink undercoat between the finish and the steel.  Any ideas on what it is?  Also any recommendations for refinishing the slide?  I was going to bead blast it once I finish polishing it out.

Thanks,

Craig

The pink is probably copper, the usual undercoat for nickel or chrome plating....

Glad you asked. I have a 1937 Brazilian S&W revolver that has a silver grey finish applied. I thought it was just bead blasted but, a local gunsmith tried to parkerize it for me and found out that when he attempted to blast it, it turned a darrk almost black color on the side plate. Any guesses what the finish is? Electoless nickel or hard chrome?
