Is it the ammo or gun Part II
« on: February 15, 2007, 09:14:44 AM »
Okay, so after getting my 336 CS back from the smith and $50.00 later for a polished something or other, I called  Marlin.   I explained the problem with the new hornady ammo jamming the action and was told that for $10.00 they will ship to me a newly shaped piece of plastic (follower) from the XLR models.   I asked why, if this is a problem for the 35 Rem caliber rifles, it wasn't made known somewhere and was told that it is on the box of Hornady ammo that I might need to replace the follower.  Hmmmmm????  I will check when I get home, but has anyone seen a warning on the box of pointed Hornady ammo that the follower might need to be upgraded before shooting their ammo?   I do not recall having seen a warning like that.

I did notice on the Marlin sight a new lever gun in a new .308 caliber with pointed hornady rounds.  They advertise it as a 400 yd gun.    Hmmmm?   I wonder if I can find a spot in my gun safe for one in stainless????  Wonder if it has the correct plastic follower????

It's on all of the LE ammo...It states to be fired in guns originally designed for the cartridge...Right after the Notice...but no warning about needing a different follower...

I understand that the pointed ammo doesn't line up quite right with the chamber as compared to the flat nosed stuff.  The redesigned follower fixes this problem.  I don't know from experience, since I shoot hand cast 180 grain round nose.

I hope this will fix the problem.  For $10.00 it will be a good cheap fix.  The problem doesn't occur all the time, just when I least need it to, like on the way to the hunting stand..

I have also heard that the ammo will not shoot well in some older guns (I think the expamle was in .444) due to the rifling in the older guns being different (slower?) than the newer ones.  I would love to try some in my .450.  If your follower doesn't pan out, it may, indeed, be the ammo is not suited to your gun. Nothing wrong with the old flatnosed ammo though.

KK, I still have some of the Rem 200 gr rounds in case the new follower doesn't fix the problem.  My distances for this rifle are short, with 75 yds being a long shot.  Most are well under that.   So, the older style ammo is fine.  I just wanted the same ammo in the rifle and my Contender, both are 35 Rem caliber..
