Wierd Experience
« on: January 02, 2007, 05:15:31 AM »
I just got a new scope for my 223 ultra varmint fluted, and sigted it in this weekend. I zeroed at 100yd with an average of 3/4" groups. I hadn't given it a good deep cleaning in a while so I took to the task. It was quite dirty, so it took a while, but cleaned up real good. Once complete I figured I would throw a few more round down range. First shot, totally missed the target. Thought I might have pulled it or something, so, second shot, no luck either. Third shot, I aimed at the very bottom of my backstop just to see where the heck it was hitting, it punched 4 inches to the left. Fourth shot, I aimed back at the bullseye, 2 inches left. Fifth shot, dead on. Has anybody ever had this happen to them? I know the barrel was totally colled off, so I let it cool off again to see if that was the issue. It wasn't. 2 hours later first shot, dead on.

Very simple, most H&Rs don't shoot well from a clean bore, they shoot very well after fouled tho. ;)

I hate to admit it, but I don't clean bores very often for this very reason.  I do wipe the outside down with Break Free though.  I'm leary of getting oil on the latch too.

It really will be up to each individual rifle barrel ...I've had several that shot better being clean than being fouled...and vise versa..Some would give good accuracy up to 15 -20 shots...then progressively get worse..It's all up to that barrel..Shooting them is the only way you can find out..

Maybe that's why mine shoots so good.  I only clean mine when they get wet.  Then all I do is run a patch through them to get out the water.  Well maybe an oily patch if they have been sitting for a while (week or so) without being shot.  And I've never had one fail to eject either.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sorry for a late reply to an older post but there is something I'd like to add.  Spudsnva, I've never cleaned a rifle that hasnt taken at least 6 shots to foul back into accuracy.  Depending on the type of solvent/cleaner you use you will find the number of shots varying as does the individuality of the rifle.

When I clean my .270win with Outers foaming bore cleaner it will take about 5-6 shots to clear the barrel of any chemicals and come back into accuracy.  When using Hoppes type liquid cleaners it will take about 9-12 shots to do the same.  This is why I prefer the foaming bore cleaners to do touch-up cleanings say just before a hunting trip or the opening day....this way you will save ammo for the hunt.  For more thorough cleanings I'll use a good copper remover such as Hoppes Bench Rest a couple times a year tops.

So yeah, it's normal to see shots go awry immediately following a cleaning.  This doesnt mean for you not to clean but rather bench it until it comes into accuracy before the hunt to be sure.
