Parkerising
« on: February 11, 2007, 08:02:15 PM »
Just finished my first parkerising job on a bolt for a Remington 581 conversion to 22 hornet.  It is dead easy, Midway has the solution, so a stainless bowl on the stove at about 180 degrees F and you are all set.  I sand blasted the parts and in about twenty minutes in the solution they were very nice and black. Amazing stuff.   Larry

Looks like a good job! I always try to parkerize instead of blue if the customer will let me. It's way easier and holds up better. Just looks weird on some guns, like Win 94's and such. The only thing I'd add is when blasting, I use silicon carbide and not aluminum oxide. I've had the al. oxide mess up the finish by getting imbedded in the metal and ending up spotty. Also, oil is the enemy of parkerizing! Wear rubber gloves and don't let the slightest speck of oil get on your part or it won't finish properly.

Do you know if you can use an aluminum container to parkerize in?  I used stainless on this one, but aluminum would be much easier to find for the long barreled action I need to do.  Larry

I don't believe aluminum would be a good idea..

If you parkerize the barrel, be sure to plug the bore.  I had a barrel ruined a few years ago because the parkerizing solution etched the bore and chamber.  In my case, things turned out ok because I got an excellent hammer forged match barrel as a replacement.
