Changing bolt face to magnum?
« on: February 18, 2007, 04:16:42 PM »
I'm trying to decide what to do in building a medium range rifle. I have a 700 lss in 30-06 and want to have the bolt face modified to accept 7mm rem mag.  Does the action need to be modified also or just the bolt.  I'm trying to fugure what it going to cost me to rebarrel to 7 mag. Anyone have recomendations on the conversion? I'm trying to decide between 3 different options.  1- convert current gun to 7 mag. 2- sell it and buy a different gun 3- sell it and buy a mgm barrel for my encore.  I'm not sure about the going with the encore, they seem to be finicky and i have never heard of anyone having good long range accuracy with them (400-600 yrds). Anyone have any recomendations of info?
thanks

Sell this one and buy what ya want. By the time you buy a barrel ,have the chamber finished, have it crowned and the rear threaded, plus the blueing you've just about reached the price of a rifle. I don't know if the bolt face can be opened or if you'd have to buy another or if the action will work. My advice would be a rifle of the chambering  that you want. Heck look around and find one of the Ultra mags in 7MM. I've seen a number of these on the used racks locally. Of the ones that I've shot, they don't have that much more recoil but shell prices are expensive in comparison.
