Author Topic: Best Hulls for Reloading? (Read 4862 times)

Will soon start trap shooting with the wife(20 gauge O/U) and plan on reloading the factory once fired hulls. What plastic shell is best for reloading? Have heard Remington STS and Winchester AA are good. Interested in hearing others experiences with shotshell hull reloadability-THANKS!

Winchester AA used to be the most popular but these days it seems they aren't as good as they once were. The Remington STS seems to have taken over now as most popular.

I hate Federal hulls of any type and generally won't even pick them up if free. The Remington field load hulls are really quite a nice loading hull and you can usually get half dozen loads or so from them and can pick them up free many places and dirt cheap when you have to pay for them.

In 12 and 20 ga the Remington Gun Glub Shells reload as nice as any other. I use the same load as STS in them.

It will depend to some extent on your set-up but both AA and STS/Gun Club should load nicely. I've had good results in 12 and 20 gauge using them for trap loads. I've never tried the Feds in 20 gauge but have gotten nice patterns from them in 12 gauge. My only criticism of the Fed hulls is that the steel head requires a lot more effort for resizing.

I also reload Winchester AA and Remington STS. The same components and recipe works for both hulls.

IMO winchester AA's are the best- they did make some bad ones the one's for light traget. The heavy targets are still good. I get 20 or so loading per hull. :grin:

The popular wisdom is STS in 12 and 20, WW HS in 28 and .410, are the best hulls for reloading. I favor the Remington down the line, and in 12 and 20, the Gun Clubs and even the Game Load hulls reload fine.

i asked this same question on the reloading forum at shotgunworld.

nitro, sts and winchester aa came back as the solid favorites.

i'm loading all three and i like the sts the best but i've got 2000 nitros, 1250 sts and 750 aa's to go thru so they'll all get used.

I have used AAs for years and they have always been excellent, but I would say the remingtons STS are better in the 12 gauge now. In 20 Ga, I think the AA is still the best hull. I load lots of hot 20 gauge loads so I can hunt chukar and sometimes pheasant with the light 20 and they hold up well.

For me, the Remington hulls represent better loads, easier loading and longer life. Just my experience.

I had 2500 or so, AA !2 ga, which I have been loading for probably 20 years. I just keep shooting them until they no longer have a good crimp. Primers always seem to seat ok. Sometimes when the get pretty fried, I will pitch them..
The really rough looking ones, I keep seperate, and I let the kids shoot them up. They are not too good about bringing back the emptys sometimes.
I finally bought another 2000 once fired AA's and I really don't know when I'll need them. I keep saying when I throw all these others away, but who knows when that will be!

One thing for sure, it's not like the old days, when you had to look in the bottom of the paper casings and see if there was still a cardboard base down there.

In the 20 ga, I use the AA casings, but they just don't load the same. One of the group members said good things about the Remingtons, but I don't shoot that many of them.

Been re-loading for about 10 years. What I have read is with the winchester AA, if it has a event logo or club logo, you should try and stay away from them. I had AA light and heavy and an event hull and they all wieghed the same. The event hull was alot slicker. Most of my rejects were from the event hulls. Had to do alot of tweeking to get those to load. I also use Nitros and STS Remingtons. No problems there. What I really like is that they are all pretty close to each other. Even the gray AA's. With this I can pretty much color code my shells for different loads. This is extremely helpful when my 2 sons are shooting with me. By the end of the night there are rounds everywhere. That makes it easy to sort at clean-up time. Hope this helps.

I have had good luck with STS, Fiocchi and Cheddite.....and recently started buying the "Multi Hull" brand from BPI...which is actually a Cheddite hull to BPI specs....they work with the same recipes....and I usually use REM PT28 or Downrange Pattern Control wads.....I only reload for the 28ga.

i have been reloading remington sport load for 12 and 20 and they are working great. the first batch i ever reloaded were AA 12s and i hated them, but they are all event marked shells and i didnt know they reloaded different than regulars. but i have had good luck with the rem sport loads, and its cheap to buy them when you need hulls.

The AA's load as good as you need and last plenty long. And they are the most common and available to get for free. At our club you can get thousands if you want. I've had a 20 gallon drum them for the last 5 years that I've hardly gotten into.
Do you guys prefer the red or the gray AA hulls?

I have heard complaints about the grays being harder to reload. I never noticed the difference, except the grays seem a little more stiff.

I like the "Grays".Load very well,crimp nicely,but most of all....I had a buddy of mine give a 2,000 for free and said let him know when I needed more
